We just built a killer new shop, and we're considering putting down one of those cement coatings to protect the floor. I went to the hardware store, and they had one part epoxy, two part epoxy, regular old paint, etc. All of it was in one gallon containers. This is a 60X80 shop, so we'll need bulk. Our main intention is to protecte the concrete and make it easier to keep clean. Has anybody done this before? Please offer suggestions.

I did the 2part expoxy from Home Depot on a 2car garage Rustoleum, as I recall... Held up so far for 7 yrs. I didn't do proper prep, I applied in poor conditions (winter) and still held up great.

Suggestion:

do NOT get the little decorative "flakes" to mix with the paint. If you drop a fastener, it makes great camouflage for screws, etc.

I added the fine grained sand to mine for anti-slip. Works great.

I plan on re-applying mine at the end of the summer.

x2 on the flakes. A friend had his professionally done and there is a difference. On his, they painted the floor, added the flakes, and THEN did the epoxy on the top. With the kits the flakes are just sitting in the epoxy. I've heard they can peel out, come up, etc.

I used a Sherwin Williams product on my garage floor. Armorseal Rexthane I Floor Coating They produce great industrial products. If you're doing the application yourself it goes on pretty easy. My only advice would be to thin the material 5-10% for better leveling and flow out. Prepare for sticker shock when you ask for retail pricing as it's $220/gal. Once the store clerk has shat their pants and fallen over ask for the store manager and better pricing. You should be able to get it at half of retail at a minimum. I can't show my pricing but let's just say it was cheaper for me to go this route on a far better product than buy one of the two part products from HD or Lowes. So there is a lot of room for pricing flexibility. For a two car garage (550 sqft) plan for two gallons.

Theres also a good product called Endura..comes in a whole bunch of standard colors, but customs available as well. Basic price for a gallon of paint and a gallon of thinner..about $160.00 If your planning on roller or brush then it's 2:1 Custom colors run about $260.00 A local body shop supply house should have it or know where to find it

I used the Rustoleum 2 part epoxy approx. 5 yrs ago. Did all the prep work step by step. After 2 yrs. it started to peel up where the tires from my wifes' Tahoe sits. I guess nothing is as permanent as you think it should be.

Myself? I put down 2 part epoxy 6+ years ago. Prep is what it's all about. Only now is some giving me problems but it's not due to the epoxy, it's due to the concrete. .... and that's after using pry bars to slide things like a lathe, mill, bandsaw and every other type of crap across it.

I did the Rustoleum kit from Home Depot with the flakes 3 years ago on a 35 x 25 foot garage. My garage floor was only 6 months old, I prepped IAW the instructions, and after applying, I did not walk on it for 2-3 days and did not park a car on it for 2 weeks to allow for full cure. I had to apply it after 10 pm because it was too hot earlier in the day. Only issue was where I had a brake fluid leak by left front tire that ate a small area. All three bays are used daily, and no other peeling, that brake fluid will eat anything. You can probably find more industrial base expoxy at a cheaper price on line, check out the web site for those truck & car shows on Sunday, I know they have done a show or two on flooring.
