Well just wrote a contract on a new house & looking to epoxy the garage floor upon moving in but want some help.

To all who have painted their shop/garage/basement floors with Epoxy concrete paint what brand or type did you use? (Internet brand,Lowes, Home Depot, ect.)

Searching the web you see many different vendors at drastically different prices & set-ups.

Reading prior posts some recommend adding sand for grip but brand of epoxy & how well its held up to abuse or chemicals (general household shop chemicals)is really what I'm looking to know.

Thanks for the feedback.

Definintly not all the same, heat of the tires pulls up the cheap stuff.

Lowes and HD products are basically the same chemically, Cleaning the concrete is the trick. Take your time, acid etch and clean, clean, clean. The epoxy is like a spray in liner, if the cleaning is not done correctly it will come off...

Search this forum for epoxy to start.

Then go to www.garagejournal.com and read about flooring. Way more than you'll ever want to know.

Please don't buy the cheap crap at the box store.

Thanks Junk for the link.......great info.

Oh yea, I did search but no specific brands were mentioned.

Dug out my notes.... I used Muralo 2 part epoxy that my local Benjamin Moore place carried. That was about 5 yrs ago. Very happy with it. I was lucky as I had a chance to do it before we moved in so the garage was totally empty. Cleaned it real well then cleaned it some more. 2 coats down with nothing mixed in (yeah, it's a little slick if snow gets on it etc). It's held up to using pry bars to slide a heavy lathe, mill, compressor and tons of other crap across it. Would definitely do it again. Only place I have any issue is in a front corner where the concrete was not in great shape. It's a very small section of the front corner out of the way etc.

If you go this route, spend the time you need to with the prep. This way you'll only do it once and be in great shape for years to come. If you don't, you'll be wicked bumming in a few months.

I used a quickcrete epoxy and have been very pleased. The cleaning as already mentioned is truly the key though, don't take it lightly do it right the first time and you'll be very happy.

Thanks for the replies.

Heard good stuff (but no experience) about products from Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore (Seabrook). Much higher quality than the Home Depot/Lowe's variety.

I used this stuff (Per Junk I might add  )and it seems to be holding up real well other then the spot that I dropped the lift on .but it also took out a nice sized chip in the concrete ( but the epoxy stayed on the chunk)

Almost fainted reading this thread. Two serious posts from some imposter using Junk's id, then the real Junk showed up. All is better now!

Honestly I have worked on many a painted concrete floor and I prefer natural concrete. Easy to clean and you can hit it with the chems each year if you wish, I personally would not bother painting a concrete floor. But hey thats me.... go ahead.

I'm partial to Sherwin Williams but there are many very good industrial floor coatings. If you're planning on staying in your current home for more than few years go with the higher quality coatings. Even if you'll be moving in a few years an epoxied floor is a nice plus when you're putting your house on the market.

Something everyone should consider when getting into floor coatings is its ability to brighten the shop A LOT. The current hanger/shop I work at has gray floors with marginal lighting and it is very noticeable how dark the hanger is. The last shop I worked at had white floors and white walls and was great for the technicians. I realize many guys here do not work in a garage/hanger for a living but it makes a huge difference to work in a bright well lit shop.

I used the rustoleum from Home Depot and it's been good. No issues with it yet and it makes clean up a breeze. It's a little slippery with snow on it but not brutal. If I did it again I'd add a little sand to the mix. Make sure you spend a bunch of time on the prep and check to see if your concrete is dry enough. You can't seal concrete that isn't completely cured or the coating will come off. ....Steve

How long has it been applied for......weeks,months,years?

I think I put it down in August last year and it's had jackstands thrown across it, every oil a 40 could leak on it and salt etc off the vehicles sitting on it and no problems. It's not exactly a "long term" review but so far, so good. ....Steve

Steve - don't let your HOA president see that. He may put it to a vote to make you remove it! ;) :D
