I’m gearing up to do the valves on the 80 and in reading my FSM, I’m not seeing anything for the 1fzfe but only for the 22re. I’ve searched here and I’m not seeing much either. Is there a walkthrough on mud that I’m missing?

What do you want to do on your valves? Regrind the seats and faces? Rework the guides? Adjust the clearances? Replace the valve stem seals? Most heads I have seen only needed the seals even in way over 200,000 miles. I just installed a head that had 235,000 miles on it and the machine shop said the only thing it really needed was seals. I did do the "while you are here" stuff and had them clean up the mating surfaces and set the clearances. They also milled the mating surface as standard procedure on such a long head.Oil consumption did go down with the new seals, but no noticeable performance gains were realized. Cost for the shop work was between 500-600$, which I am quite happy with.

I guess I’m showing my ignorance here, lol. All I’m hoping to do is adjust valve clearances.

I have low compression on one of my cylinders, haven’t tried the oil test but my hope, given my miles, is that clearances are off.

I’ve adjusted the clearances on my dirt bike but that was only 2 valves vs. 24. I want be sure I have a handle on how the method/steps should go from start to finish before I take the cover off.

3FE owner here, but I *think* valve adjustment isn't even part of the routine maintenance on a 1FZ, and requires adding/removing shims rather than simply tightening/loosening locknuts.

Right on. There are no rocker arms or lifters on the 1FZ motor. Increase or decrease the total shim thickness between the cam lobes and the buckets on top of the valve tips. I had low compression on #1 cylinder and it was leaky valves due to burned/damaged valve face and/or valve seats. Repair will be taking place in the near future. I installed a freshly serviced head that I already had. Basically the same work as doing a Head Gasket.

Damn, sounds more involved/expensive than I was hoping. Oh well. What needs to be done needs to be done.

Here is the FSM Tune up PDF for a 1994, valve adjustment starts at EG14.

so how bad is your compression? How does it run?

It runs okay, I’m getting pretty poor mpg. I also hear a ticking under the hood - I believe this is valve related. I was told by a shop that I had bad compression but I don’t recall the measurements.

Could be PS pump as well creating the ticking
