My Center caps have faded and want to get them primed and re-painted to freshen up my rigs look but i dont know how to take them off, I know theres a rectangular slot that you're supposed to just put a screw driver in but I honestly have no idea what the hell im doing haha I dont want to break anything ! is there a specific tool I should use or technique to get them off ? Many thanks !

pull they're just held in there with spring clips

just pull on them ? what am I supposed to put in the rectangular slot ? I heard theres a metal ring of some sort that needs to be like pushed down or something. really was looking forward to getting these suckers off today :bang:

Hold the cap with both hands and pull straight out.

You can pull them off with your hands unless you're the proverbial 'wimp'.

You can use a flat head screwdriver in the slot if you muscles have atrophied.

Stop over thinking and do it. I personally don't both with the stupids caps, removed them years ago and they're sitting somewhere in the garage. It's just more foo foo that serves no useful purpose.

cheers,
george.

I have an extra special tool cap remover. I'll sell it to you for cheap if you PM me.

caps came out ! used paint thinner to take off all the old excess and shot them with 3 coats of identical rim silver rustoleum and came out beautiful !, trying to figure out how to do the inner Toyota symbol now however, does anyone have a photoshop stencil printout or should i just take a fine paint brush and do it by hand ?

After all the drama with getting them removed, are you nervous about the re-install? :flipoff2:

no they pop right on as simple as they come out, sorry for just picking up the truck, im still learning how everything comes off of it and am on a budget so I didnt want to have to dish out 40 bucks for a new center cap if I had broken one by taking it off the wrong way...

I'd hand brush the details then clear coat them a couple of times. Pictures, please!

definitely will take some pics ! I'm going to be custom painting them since I purchased the 40th anniversary edition. I would really like to put the special badging color (dark chrome grey) for the Toyota symbol on the center cap instead of the gold which came factory, and im thinking of painting the dark emerald pearl color of the cruiser on the circle part of the center cap ( see attached pic of where im talking about ).

Wow, lots of detail for a center cap. Good luck with it, Im sure it will look great.

40thAnniversaryFJ80 - do you not have the OEM tool bag in the left rear where the bottle jack is located? Or did I miss that you said it wasn't there.
