Hey guys,
My front end is starting to "click". Time for some Birfeilds, does anyone know where to find some of reasonable quality locally? Toyota quoted me $900 a piece!!

4 Wheel auto in Edmonton.
Unless you go to the US of A and order some....
They are pricy and get pricier if you have ABS.

Yeah, I haven't phoned Dan yet. I bought some on E-bay a while back, they were like $100, came with the ABS rings and everything... They showed up, and they were 2 different styles and quite possibly made of cheese! I'm thinkin' they are good trail spares at best! Guess I'll have to spend the big bucks. Have you ever heard of anyone swapping sides? Apparently this works, and they only click in reverse...

Id just bite the bullet and get them done. I had mine redone before I left for Moab last month and althiugh expensive, its cheap insurance. Because if they let go, it will be in the middle of nowhere and it will happen in a bad way. If you can do the work yourself, go for it. get the birfs and all associated hardware from either 4wheel auto or cruiseroutfitters. They are the best places for the price. I had 4 wheel auto do mine and all bearings and seals etc etc. but I know now that the front end is done, will last , and i dont have to worry about it. it is unfortunatly a nessesary evil

If you don't mind me askin', what did you pay forthe rebuild?

^ The light duty one goes for 225$
Wouldn't a heavy duty one at 350$ be more realistic?

What about longfeilds? $375 a side, they're s'posed to be the shiznit. For offroad use only though?

That is because when they are always spinning they longfields wear out faster. I have a friend in Red Deer who has shot outer spline and drive flanges on his HDJ 81 and instead of wasting money on stock components he is getting long fields with a part time conversion kit as well.

That way he saves wear on all front end components and can run the longfields on the street. If you have ABS though your ABS won't work with part time 4x4.

To me if you plan to keep your truck the part time 4x4 and longs are the way to go. It comes into just a little more money than buying 2 stock Toyota Birfs but with the slight gain in mileage and less wear and tare on components it pays for itself in no time. But only if you plan on keeping the truck.
