FZJ tranny question (1 Viewer)

Hello, I am new to your site. And... I recently purchased a 1994 FZJ
LandCruiser with 133k miles on it. Got it from Ebay about a month ago. It's in pretty good shape.
I've been looking for a ( one I could afford) LC for a long time.

Anyway, I needed a new radiator for starters. That is done!
I bought one on www.radiators.com Retail is $500. cost to me $260.
When I start it cold, the transmission seems to take a while to shift into over drive.
Is it time for s tranny service?
Thanks for any help you guys (and girls) can give.

Normal. It won't go into overdrive until it's warmed up.

You'll have to sell that jeep, you know.

Hmmmm, sell the Jeep? Not quite yet! I still have to throw more $$$ at it...

There is a cold cycle feature that prevents the tranny from going into O/D on your vehicle to encourage faster warmup. Is this what you're experiencing? Welcome to the board, BTW.

You likely already know this, but I'd suggest with any used vehicle that all fluids be changed out ASAP. Cheap insurance and then you know your starting point.

Hello and welcome to the forum and to 80 ownership!

Eric and Doug gave you good advice [ including selling the Heep ]

Change all the fluids including brake and PS as soon as you can. Replacing the coolant is very important in a used vehicle. Use synthetic lubricants if your budget can take the hit. Find a dealer or shop that will do a "fluid replace" procedure on the tranny. Not a "power flush" and don't use additional cleaner fluid in transmission. The procedure uses your transmission pump to pull in new fluid and pump out the old fluid.

If you are close to Golden CO (doubt it from the pics of your front yard) then head by Christo's place; they can do all the fluids including the described tranny procedure.
