Shell Rotella 15w40 is the conclusion I came to. These engines were designed 40 years ago, long before synthetics and seem to have great longevity with standard, inexpensive oil. I didnt see enough gains from switching/paying more to warrant a switch. Though synthetic gear oil might be something to look into...

what are the chances that 15w-40 will lessen the times i see the oil pressure light? my level is fine, and the light comes on intermittently whether the guage shows 1/4 or 2/3's. thanks for your replies. the po was a jiffy lube guy.

Slight thicker oil will raise the pressure and corresponding gauge reading. The light has nothing to do with it, it is oil level only, the float sensor is known to stick, become wonky with age.

I have a 95 and it is not equiped with an idiot light for the oil pressure. I believe the light you are talking about is the oil level light. It operates independantly of the oil pressure gauge. The light will tell you that your low on oil (usually about a quart) and this is certainly affected by the current inclination of the vehicle (uphill, downhill, left lean, right lean). Best to verify with the dipstick, but if that says you have oil you might need to replace the sensor.

If you think oil pressure is suspect then its best to check it with a secondary gauge.

I go with 5w-30 most of the year and 15w-40 July, August, September

I remember reading that 5w-30 is recommended for fuel economy reasons, and seeing a chart from the Australian owners manual (IFZ-FE) that had thicker oil recommended for higher average temps?

With that said I have run my 98 Camry 3.0 V6 exclusively on 5w-30 for 242,000 miles and it doesn't smoke at all and if it uses any oil it cant be detected at the dipstick.

I used to run Rotella.
No longer. A chemist convinced me it's not worth the extra $$$.
I now run Napa 5W-30 with BG MOA.
I drain it when the oil level light comes on steady, roughly 4x or 5x a year.
No VSS means no mileage interval. :hillbilly:

I don't remember NAPA oil is significant cheaper than Rotella? Is that cheaper than running Rotella in a 12 months period?

For those who prefer to use the “for everybody else but USA” Toyota recommended oil chart, the Wallyworld on Elliot in Tempe still has 15W-50 Mobil One. Picked up two, 5 quart jugs of oil goodness today.:hillbilly:

AU viscosity chart
1FZFE motor
20w50 oil- -7C deg to 38C plus ; 19F to 100F plus
15w40 oil -10C deg to 38C plus; 14F to 100F plus
10w30 oil -18C to 38C deg; 0F to 100F
5w30 oil -30C to 8C deg; -22F to 46F

Does it not get over 100 F in Oz?

:meh: I run 5-30 Mobil1.

My engine only has 44k on it and has had M1 5-30 since 3500 miles. I'm just sticking with it.
