HAPPY to post that my exhaust whistling is no longer present. This morning I had the Walker brand factory fit replacement muffler installed. It fits perfectly. Muffler cost $114 from Summit and install cost $68.

There has been a lot of speculation on Mud about what is causing some 80’s to whistle from the tail pipe while some don’t. Mine began whistling at about 271k miles. Muffler replacement was the fix in my case.
Would you happen to have a part number for muffler?

Was wondering if anyone has any other options in mind for a "very quiet" muffler.. shhh, I too don't have any cats and I had a Flowmaster installed nearly 5 yrs ago... 5 yrs of not having any decent conversations or hearing music.....

It’s been a while since I put it on so I don’t have a part number but it’s still working well despite the fact it’s all beat up from rocks and big log crossings.

Yeah. The previous owner put a Flowmaster on mine and I’m contemplating making a change. It still has original cats being in the People’s Republic of California. It sounds ok from the outside but like the previous poster stated it’s pretty loud on the inside for music and conversations. I don’t need the rumble or fart box noise. It’s a dog straight six, just let it do it’s job. My choices since the Walker is discontinued is a factory muffler for $600 plus or working on some sound deadening on the interior, doors and quarter panels (which I was planning anyways) and a YouTube video of some Canadian wrapping the muffler on his Chevy in some thermal exhaust wrap. I might try a wrap from the manifold all the way back, well as much and I can reach. Any thoughts?

Wrap seems likely to increase the rate at which the exhaust components corrode though operating conditions will be a big factor on that front. Another downside could be more difficulty inspecting for and addressing exhaust issues but I wouldn't wrap the joints at least for this reason. I've had mixed results with similar efforts in long-term, regular driver applications but haven't tried this on an 80 specifically.

Something similar to the following is what I've been considering doing on my '97:

Here is the link of what I was contemplating. I'm not too concerned with corrosion since I'm in central CA that is pretty dry.

There are quiet mufflers out there on the market but they are not a bolt in solution. Walker makes a muffler called Quiet flow which I think I’ll use on the new exhaust system of my current 80 series build.

I emailed with Walker yesterday and they stated the Walker Quiet-Flow Muffler 54223 is unfortunately obsolete with no replacement available for this vehicle, we apologize for any inconvenience.

Like I said, you might have to depart from a fully oem style exhaust system.

I got hung up on some rocks recently, didn't tear the OEM muffler off but dented it pretty good climbing a ledge.

Leaned on the slee transfer skid nicely but tore both exhaust mounts and am looking to tuck the muffler to avoid the same hang up in the future.

Currently considering an 18" SS magnaflow offset oval or the 18" magnaflow SS 4.5 inch round. I don't mind a deeper exhaust note and have a 14" magnaflow on my 4runner with a nice throaty note, no droning.

I will trim the tailpipe and keep the resonator for now.
Looking for muffler recommendations, tuck and tone, please.

My cats were stolen awhile back and a shop welded in tubing to seal up the opening. So stock mufler, no cats. However, it smells bad and I'm going with a group to the mountains next month and don't want to stink out everyone behind me.

Could the aging muffler influence smell in any way, or is my best best to have an aftermarket cat put in? I'd like to get a new muffler at the same time, something that sounds a little louder than stock but not crazy.
