Fusible link and fuses issue

The fusible link on my '84 is located on the passenger side, up front. Mine is half in a couple of the large holes that go into the fender. Very hard to get to. Impossible to test without removing it which is a huge PITA. I have a thread on replacing with with modern slow blow fuses.

Just tuned in and thanks Rudi , I now understand what the fusible link is for. It's a meter shunt. ie as you noted, the meter movement can only take milli amps so the majority of the current ie. many amps can be bi passed thro' the shunt. Simple! Thanks again.

I now understand what the fusible link is for. It's a meter shunt.

First and foremost, the fusible link is a fuse that protects the wiring harness from burning up. This is true of all fusible links. On '79 and up FJ40s, Toyota also used the link as a shunt. On earlier cruisers, it was just a fuse.

I purchased an '82 5 months ago and the ammeter was not working. I was excited to see that one of the 5 amp fuses was blown. It looks as though the fusible link was repaired so I'm guessing the shorted it out or broke it and then a 5 amp fuse blew do to the current attempting to traverse the ammeter. Now that the fuse was replaced the needle is moving but it is almost imperceptible. Is that normal? With the blower,headlights and flasher on it has a faint twitch on each flash but that's it. When I turn on the headlights faint twitch to the negative side and then returns to the center.

And the fusable link is no longer available...so you will need to have one made.
@Coolerman is the man.

I am uncertain about a detail on this. On a '75, the alternator charges the battery thru the ammeter, later 40s are configured differently and have two fuses to keep shorts from the alternator to the fusible link from burning up the harness. (I know of one '75 with a past harness fire at the ammeter.) Could I use my earlier ammeter wired like it is an '81 production, or is it a fundamentally different ammeter?
