My 88 62 just underwent some cosmetic repair. Got rid of the usual rust, patched what needed it and a new paint job. Since then it has developed a problem with the fuel system.

I can get it started but when i put it in gear or hit the gas any the engine begins to stall and eventually quits. I replaced the fuel filter, same problem. The fuel pressure was checked by hooking up a gauge and jumpering the pins on the check connector on the firewall and turning on the ignition switch, and it was around 30 psi. I don't think it is the fuel pump, at least i hope not, don't really want to take down the tank. Could it be the regulator?

My repair manual says to pinch the fuel return line and if the pressure went up it is the regulator. But the pressure did not seem to change any.

As a side point I was thinking about putting a dual exhaust with glass packs. Do you think that would help the engine breathe a little better and perhaps get a little better fuel economy?

thanks

Curious, does it stall when you don't put it into gear and hit the gas? How's the idle in general? All cylinders seem to fire? I'm thinking it could be ignition related or fuel injector related. Maybe your injectors are bad and pouring enough fuel to flood the engine. Is you truck's MPG low? Is your engine burning a little rich? I guess it could be related to the recent cosmetic repairs but it seems unlikely unless somebody messed around near the engine bay.

it will idle for a couple of minutes then quits. Then it is hard to restart. All cylinders are firing. It is not running rich. It seems to be more of a fuel starvation problem rather than a flooding problem. My mpg was around 11-12 but it has been a while (march or april) since i drove it any real length.

thanks

There is a wire harness near the MAF that sometimes gets their wires retracted. If you moved anything anywhere near the air filter you might have disconnected these wires within the harness. Disconnect it and inspect all the pins for length. I had my 62 run poorly because of this during a filter change.

Next thing to check are the all the vacuum lines. Make sure all are connected and none are frayed/cracked at the ends.

thanks everybody. i think i have narrowed it down to the pressure regulator. i followed the procedure in the hayns manual by putting a pressure gauge in the fuel line, then attaching a hand vaccuum pump to the vaccuum line of the regulator. There was no change in fuel pressure. According to the manual i need to replace the pressure regulator.

Having a similar problem on my 90 FJ62, idles good when first started but as soon as I put into gear she wants to stall. I have to pump the pedal to keep it running, no power, hesitates and bogs....Where did you install your Fuel Pressure Gauge?

Thanks

trying doing an "advance search" using the keywords FPR and 3fe. Just remember that the 3fe is found in the 80's series section also and the 62's engine is not exclusively found in the the 60's section.Flyingbiker, any update on the solution?
