I went to replace the fuel filter on my 85 FJ60 and the new one does not seem to fit. I got a FRAM G6468 from Checker. The inlet and outlet seem to be too small. The hoses do not fit snug, very loose even with the clamps.

The old one has no markings on it. I have no idea what it is, but is taller and a little more narrow.

Anyone have a correct part recommendation?

Also, I've been parking in the garage and the gas fumes are pretty strong. Any commom reasons why it would be smelling like gas? Just changed the cap because the seal was pretty rotted. I don't notice any gas leaking anywhere.

Thanks for any help.

You have three fuel lines going from the engine area to the fuel tank. One sends fuel to the carb through the fuel pump. One returns the unused fuel to the tank. the other pluggs into you charcoal canister and returns the vapors to the tank. They are rubber but turn into "Hard Lines" about where they connect to the frame in the area under the lines going to the clutch slave cylinder.

Remove you passenger side cover in the cargo area. You will see the hoses and the vapor expansion tank. If any of those hoses are disconnected or rotted off, you will smell fuel.

The easiest thing is to take your old fuel filter with you back to the auto parts store. It has a 3/8 nipple or it does not.

Another thing to check for is that the fuel cap actually seals. On my 60 the lower tang in the filler neck has been bent by the succession of filler nozzles. If I turn the cap completely to the stops it pops off the lower tang and I smell fuel while driving. If I stop about 1/2 way then it does not pop off and the smell of fuel while driving is gone.

If you stand in the driver side passenger door and your back seat is down, here is what you will be looking at.

Sorry but I was too lazy to walk around the rig and open the rear hatch. It was locked. :D
