Hey All New here.

This might be a strange one but my hard wheeling days are over and im looking for a touring vechile.

Ive been looking at all the Wagons above and stuck on what to get i have 35 to 40k to spend. I currently have 2 1fz 80s love them to death but are just too thirsty to travel IMHO

I probably prefer the 200 out of all them but I am just way to scared of buying a dusted one so that has turned me away I understand you can look in airbox and intake hoses but ive seen people that have bought ones that aren't dusted and still have layer of dust in intake hoses so im just way to scared lol another slight let down is id prefer a manual.

Ive done about 10hrs driving as of late in a 2014 1kd 150 prado manual and love the newish features front and rear ac and 1200 ks out of a tank and crusie control.

Also spent some time in a 1hdt 105 I also really like there interiors and how comfy they are so thats were my idea of a fte 100 has come from but don't think they have rear ac and crusie control?

Have not driven a 76 or been in onel but would probably only be able to afford a work mate one so not as luxurious as id like.

A vx limited 80 i haven't been in or driven so not sure how comfy they are and also abit of a let down that they are only auto. You pay about 40k for one were I am with 200,000ks

Ive seen on some sites you can import for about 25k but thats alot of money to be buying a unseen car and idk how legit the sites are and also the process to get ine registered in QLD Aus.

Atm im highly considering a fte 100 or 150 prado as there 20 to 35k leaving me with upgrade money both have semi cheap Rego and from what I can see fairly good fuel economy.

200 series 1vd would be awsome but as I said just to scared of buying a dusted one plus more expensive rego and not the best fuel economy.

The other 2 are options but probably on the bottom of my list.

What would you buy for touring thats has pretty good fuel economy and reliability kwep in mind what ever wagon i get will be getting a small lift to fit 35s and Rooftop tent and touring setup in the back.

I wanna do a fair few big trips in 2026 vic high country and east Gippsland 2500ks there

Finke desert race and simpson desert 4000ks there

And Karratha Wa 5500ks there.

I simply can't justify doing these trips in my 1fz 80 using 22l to the 100ks. Its about $150 to fill up and get 400ks out of a tank ahah.

Not sure if this is the correct thread to post in so if it isn't im sorry.

I appreciate your guys time for reading this and giving me your opinions cheers

How many people are you touring with? How heavy do you expect to be laden and any towing?

IMO, for 1 or 2 people, 150 Prado is going to be hard to beat. Better efficiency with a strong 4.6L V8, great size and agility, and all the reliability goodness of a Toyota. You mention efficiency and affordability several times so those qualities are going best found in the 150.

The 200-series is bigger and stronger, but if you're not using those, it's just more for more.

Is dusting a problem in Australia with the 200 diesel engines? Or is it a problem there with any vehicle?

"Its about $150 to fill up and get 400ks out of a tank" -- seems about what I get in my USDM spec 5.7 petrol LC200 converted to USD per MPG. I don't know what fuel economy those other rigs have, but I doubt they're much different than 15-20 mpg 🤷‍♂️

Not looking at petrol lc200 looking at the 4.5l twin turbo diesel 1vd

Right, I understand that... but I doubt its much different. Diesel or petrol, I do not see any of them getting significantly better than 15-20 mpg.

Edit: just did a quick search and indeed, it is roughly about 18 vs 21mpg on the highway.

Maybe I have different expectations when I have concerns about efficiency - ie. 50 mpg hybrid Camry or 60 mpg Prius.

Nothing covers the miles as comfortably and effortlessly as a 200, but as @TeCKis300 said, it's a lot of vehicle if you don't need it. Also, given your concerns of getting a good 200 in budget. I think the 150 prado will be much better on fuel and they're great all around trucks, just less suited to "heavy duty" work like towing or carrying a ton of weight. Diesel manual prado sounds like the sweet spot to me.

This was my 2011 Prado 150 I drove when I was in Saudi Arabia. I put 60k on it in 4 years and those was primarily long road trips across Saudi, to Dubai and Oman as well as many trips into various deserts in Saudi and Dubai. I bought it used with 165k on it and the tires, struts and brakes were shot so since it needed new struts I put on OME 2.5" lift, and 28" tires. It was 100% reliable in the time I owned it, just changed oil regularly.

The good is it was just as capable as the various land cruisers and Sequoias friends drove on those trips as well as quite a few Prados both stock and lifted like mine. The one thing I felt it lacked was power, the 4.0l petrol engine just didn't have much pull even with just me in the car. Loaded to the gills with camping gear and extra petrol it got where it was going, but I'm used to vehicles with more power. Between me not ever understanding how to translate l/km to mph and fuel price being fixed at $2.18 a gallon I never paid attention to fuel consumption. I just kept an eye on the fuel gauge on longer trips as the 400+ km range always seemed a bit lacking, and was much less when driving across Abu Dhabi at 160 kph.

A friend had a 76 series that I drove and rode in a few times. As cool as they look, the interior feels much tighter than the prado, the ergos and ride are quite crude. If you want a dedicated trail rig a 76 series would be great, if you'll mostly be on pavement on long road trips don't even consider a 76 series. I've done enough long road trips to appreciate you want the smoothest, quietest, most comfortable vehicle you can obtain as noise and vibration really fatigue you on long trips. I've also learned 14-15 hour days of driving are for young folks, limit it to 10 hours a day max.

If you can get a Prado diesel and the size and capabilities will work for you over a 200 series that's probably a good way to go. I'm looking forward to getting my LX 570 now that I'm back home and need the extra power. Not to say that mileage doesn't matter, but to me capability of a vehicle is what I'm after and cost to purchase, maintain and fuel are what they are and I'll pay what it takes to get what I need.
