I think I'm gonna faint...

$1300+ for a 2003 in OZ!! (7 manuals and or supplements)

Did things significantly change, or did Toyota just separate the earlier phone-book-sized volumes into more smaller volumes so they could charge more? My LX has 3 volumes. Maybe since the '06 LC comes with/without AHC, both are included.

Is that the price from Toyota Material Distribution in CA or from the dealer? I found TMD to have lower prices than the dealer for Lexus manuals. I was surprised.

Since I'm in the printing biz (large in-house operation) for a major corporation the cost and markup on those manuals are typical. Plus, Toyota also may be trying to discourage customers (or service competitors) from buying them for several reasons:

- service revenues
- printing cost
- distribution cost
- inventory cost
- rework
- scrap
- obsolescence

Multiply that by all the local languages and model variations produced globally and you can see how a corporation's printed documentation costs can skyrocket. There's a trend to move away from paper and transistion to CD-R... we produce those as well.

For a fraction of the cost you can write all languages (pdf & XML) on a single CD-R. The standard cost (manufacturing) is about $8 (or less) for a CD-R manual, as compared to $100-$300 for a paper manual, per language. For the past 3-4 years customer demands continue at approximately 50% paper, 50% CD-Rs.

We sell our 3 volume paper manuals for about $700.. a 50%-60% gross margin makes that consistent with Toyota, and we're in a totally different business.

My guess is Toyota has the CD-R versions available for internal or dealer use... but may not want to sell CD-Rs to the public due to illegal copying and or copy write infringement.

It may be worth a try to ask the parts department if FSMs are available on CDs.

good luck.

The Toyota Tech information Site (TIS) will probably be the way to go

http://www.techinfo.toyota.com/

- download what you need each time -or with a cable connection you can probably get the five manuals in a couple of days. People who have done so say that keeping the files orderly is difficult. I expect that some of the 2006 info will not even be available yet. It may take a few years to get everything you want on the TIS.

You also get the TSBs and other updates. I have the FSM for my 98 and use it alot but would still probably be better off with just using the tech site.

Call Cdan (our MUD parts source) about the manuals. He got me a good deal off the list price.

Contacting Cdan

Dunno. This may be considered a major update with the VVTi so they have the carryover information as well. I couldn't imagine using 1% of what is contained in the manual(s), but it would be nice to have as I like to see how things work.

Not sure how much the Lexus version is...

The TIS may be the way to go.
