Hey all! I’m updating the stereo on the Prado today and want to replace the stock paper speakers in the front. Anyone done this before? I have replaced the stock head unit and back speakers. The front speakers are behind metal and I really don’t want to cut them out. Any insight on speaker size, dash removal, etc?

Once you pull out the instrument cluster/speedometer, you should have access to the driver side speaker.
DON"T cut anything. They are accessible.

The stock dash speakers are pretty small. I want to say the mounting holes are 4" diameter. IIRC.

looking forward to see how it goes. ordered new system over weekend, just have to get crutchfield to ship the stuff.

depending on how yours goes, may have it done at a shop. lazy and all.

Just did mine last week - seems like more work than it really is. Don’t get me wrong, kind of a pain, but not too bad.
Have fun!

Lenny-
I removed the passenger side via the glovebox, no big deal. The driver’s side is a pain. I can reach my hand through the a/c and heat ducting but no real way to get a wrench in there none the less a way to remove it. Did you remove the dash and go in from top or go through the bottom? Looks like you can go through the bottom but can’t define exactly how to remove the ducting. I had my Japanese mechanic look at it and he was scratching his head too. If you went through the top part of the dash, how did you remove it? Keep in mind I have a 1995 KZJ71. It’s at Toyota now so no real way to send pics. I removed the passenger side speaker and ordered new 4” speakers off how they looked. Any insight is better than what I’m working with now.

I was reluctant to start pulling my dash apart as well, but once I just dove in, it really wasn’t that bad.
Two screw above the radio, then that trim around the radio and vent comes off. There is an additional screw under there too. Above your gauges there are two screws that go up towards the dash. That is all that I remember- I think that is it. Next get a trim tool or be gentle with a screwdriver and pry out the entire trim piece that covers your speedo and vents (this pulls out towards you). On the right side there will be two dash lights then unscrew a quarter turn and your 4wd selector to unplug. This should allow you to move it to the side and gain access to the top of your speaker.

Spot on Lenny! Will give it a try when I get the truck back. Thanks for the advice.

I too need to replace the drivers side speaker. Already replaced the passenger side speaker.
Just don't want to brake anything on the instrument cluster which has kept from replacing this speaker up to this point.
Thanks to Lenny for the details for the cluster removal.

Again, not as bad as it looks. I was sort of surprised at how easy it all came apart. Even with that trim off, it is still pretty tight getting in there.

Today I decided to replace the drivers side speaker.
Removed the 4 screws for the trim at the base of the instrument cluster and another 5 screws at the inside top of the instrument cluster trim and leveraged the back of the trim upwards to remove. There were two light bulbs that needed to be unscrewed for the fuel FILTER and HEATER indicators.
After the removal of the instrument cluster trim swapping out the 4" speaker was easy.
I installed a set of POLK DB402 4" coaxial marine grade speakers.
The new speakers sound much better than the factory originals.

Thanks to Lenny for the access procedure.

Glad it worked well! I used the same speakers in mine. It made such an improvement that I now am thinking I want an amp installed.
