I'm about to be downgraded from 1/2  to 1/8  and maybe lower but at least I won't get slammed for not searching first...

How do I remove the front parking/clearance lamp on my 1990 HDJ81? This should be dead simple. There's a screw from the top corner of the headlamp assembly to the parking/clearance lamp assembly. Removing that screw allows the top to wiggle, but the bottom and the back are still in tight.

My limited experience has taught me that in cases like this, more force is usually not the least expensive option. So, what else is holding it on.

Thanks, -Steve (with almost no  left and even less pride... :o )

You mean the one on the front corner? The bottom is held in by a tension pin...gentle pressure pulling straight out (toward the front of the truck) should slowly release this pin from the tension mount it slides into.

Yes, the lamp beside the headlamp assembly.

Thanks, -Steve

Here's a picture of the problem.

So, to remove:
remove top screw,
insert fingernails between body and rear of lamp,
pull forward,
and don't be a Wuss. Right?

Thanks, -Steve

yup, the trick is to pull *forward*, not out

Forward is the key, once you get it out you will see you have to align this pin to get it back in and sitting flush. HTH

Great, thanks guys!

I just didn't want to break something foolishly. LOL, as if driving some of the trails around here isn't foolish...

I spent an embarrasing amount of time on it this afternoon, but now I'm too pumped to sleep, so time for more qaulity bonding time with the Cruiser.

It also helps to rotate and/or wiggle the assembly while pulling forward. It's about a 1/4 inch pin with a swollen head that is simply held in by friction.

...and rust. Where did that come from? That's just not allowed!

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement guys. I pulled and wiggled and pulled until I thought some thing must give or break until I had the back tabs out and and a 1/2" gap at the top; but still the bottom pin would not release. I was able to insert a long, large screw driver down from the top and then pry apart near the pin and it finally popped apart with no damage. :D

In case some other scared noob has similar trouble, here are some pictures of what we're up against.

First, is the hole where the lamp fits; notice the rust covered ring near the bottom right; that's what caused my grief. Don't look at a PO's hacked splice into the wiring (even tho, that's what I was in there for).

Next, is a close up of the hole in the head lamp mount that the pin on the parking lamp fits into.

And last, is a close up of the pin on the back of the parking lamp before I cleaned up the rust.

Thanks again for the help. I was able to remove 3 "wires to nowhere" and was able to get access to the IPF "black box" that controls the driving lamps and will be able to rewire it.

WOW....yea that rust probably was holding it on tight. Good pictures to show what you're up against. Luckily mine are a nice shade of silver/bare metal.

Glad you got in there finally!
