Hey guys,

I am in the process of replacing my front passenger side hub and I have a small problem. The widest part of the hub is too big to fit inside the rotor. It is about 1/16th to 1/8th inch bigger than the original. My question is:

Can I just grind it down until it fits, or does it have to be machined so it is perfectly round?

I am sure I can get it close with the ol' eyeball method, but I want to be sure it is OK before I do it.

Wow, wow ,wow, let me get this straight, are you trying to get the rotor to fit over the hub or behind the hub and it that 1 1/2 inch spacer your using for the wheel rim so it misses in TRE.

PS. It should go on like this, studs go through rotor first, then into hub.

Seems to me by your picture your are putting the hub on first then the rotor which is being held on by a wheel spacer?

Thanks for the reponses. It was late so I probably did a bad job explaining.

When I say hub I am refering to these:

Rotor fits over left one. O.D. of right one is about a sixteenth too big.

The conversion was done by PO and it works well. I am replacing the hub because PO forgot to mention that there was a stipped bolt hole and a broken bolt where you bolt on the Warn hub.

Don't worry about the spacer. if the hub (Not the locking hub) was mounted the rotor should slip over it - it doesn't. So the question is grind or no.

Which disc brake conversion did the PO do or was it an axle swap? Doesnt look like a minitruck. If that were the case, the rotor mounts to the back of the hub as previously described. Not sure what you have.

In any case, Id have the rotors machined to minimize balance issues.

I don't know what conversion was used. I the process of figuring it out. I need to see if I can id the calipers to get a hint.

Any help is appreciated as always!

get a proper fookin' hub then!
Looks like a GM caliper to me.
 
It looks like a homemade disk brake conversion.....the backing plate looks like a 40 series drum brake backing plate...with welded in tabs to mount the disc calipers. Not sure what to guess about what type of knuckle you have in there either.

Does it feel rough on the inside of the knuckle housing...as if it was ground down?

I would suspect that if you measure the distance across the old wheel bearing hub, you will find that it has a smaller outside diameter, compared to the piece that you are trying fit the rotor over. It would not surprise me that the PO had ground down the outside diameter of the original wheel bearing hub so that the GM rotor would slip-fit over it.

You should not have a problem doing the same thing. This can be accomplished by either using a lathe, or, a grinder; the Lathe is just cleaner. ;)
 
Seems funny to me PO would cheap out on brakes and spend a grip on steering. Upgrade to finespline and Mini brakes... That setup looks kinda ghetto. To answer your question, grind it for now to make it work and then fit a decent setup to swap it out.

i'd clearance the hub so any future rotors will bolt on.
 
Since those are coarse splined axles.....;)

how are the tabs that hold the caliper mounted?? are they welded to the old drum brake backing plate? seems kinda getho, and or dangerous. brakes are a component I don't want to fail.
