Greetings, this is my first post and I want to say thanks to all on here y'all have helped me a ton with my 80 so far. Today I was searching for an issue I have and can't seem to find anything so I will ask it here and if I am in the wrong spot or if someone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. I have a horrible shaking in the front end but it only occurs on occasion and has only happened when I am on the interstate going somewhere north of 65 mph. If I hit a large enough bump the whole front end starts to shake, I have to pull in to emergency lane, slow down to about 35-40 mph then it all goes away and I can get back and drive on the road at speed until I hit another major bump. Anyu thoughts? BTW, I seached "death wobble" and couldn't find anything to my situation. No lift, etc, all factory and have redone front seals and bearing, and put a new stabilizer on yesterday and it still did it this morning. Thanks again.

A complete inspection of your front end would be necesary.

1. TRE (ALL Tie Rod Ends including Drag link and steering arm ends)
2. Have you inspected your trunion bearings?
3. Check for correct Wheel brearing pre-load.
4. Bushings like Front Control arm and sway bar bushings.
5. shock absorber and its bushings
6. Look for badly worn and/or damaged tire

That's all that comes to mind at the moment.

You stated that you have redone seals and bearing... can you elaborate on how far into this you went and exactly what components were changed/inspected?

It was the driver side seal, and bearings. They repacked the other side as its seal wasn't leaking. I will get some more detail. Thanks for the info and will start checking each one of these.

Double check the Panhard rod torque - it's around 130 ft lbs IIRC.

Did the problem start after the work on the front axle? Maybe also check for loose knuckle studs/nuts??

It was doing it before after the leak started. I had it supposedly "aligned" before I bought it. But I've had no trouble out of it until just recently.

Worn tres...

Mine did the same thing. It was a combo of a blown out steering damper and loose wheel bearings. Mainly the loose wheel bearings.

Like others have said a few things come to mind right off. Tires out of balance and loose wheel bearings. Worn shocks that can't react fast enough for vibrations at highway speed.

If it was there before are your wheel stud holes ob-longed? Check your control arm bushings for ware. These are often overlooked.

Mine did it with loose wheel bearings. It was just as you described. A bump would set it off. I rebuilt the frontend and with the wheel bearings tightened up, I've had no occurances in 1,000 miles. Sometinhg to consider after fixing is the damage that shaking is doing to TRE's and bushings and such. I'll be replacing my TREs as preventative maintenance.

Thanks for all the help, so far so good, I picked up a used panhard from a lc breaker here in al and that has stopped it After checking bearings etc. we looked at it sitting still and when we turned the steering wheel the whole frame moved differently from the body, so we changed it out and so far it seems to work. Thanks for all the tips and help, greatly appreciated!
