Question. After replacing my passenger side CV Axle last weekend on my 04 Tundra DC I noticed a leak. Slow drip. I took off the old shield and used it on the replacement axle. Is this my problem? Any tips?

Assuming the Tundra diff is similar to my 4Runner's, my guess is that you might have hit the seal on the diff side when re-installing the axle.

Ya. Probably did. I had a tough time getting that snap ring to pass thru. I took in and out a few times before it locked in. Is a press needed to put that seal on the axle?

No press needed, but there is a seal installer tool. You can usually make do with a large socket or even a plumbing fitting (i.e. irrigation coupler). Tap it into place with a hammer, but not too far.

When reinstalling the axle, face the opening of the snap ring downward. That way, it has its lowest profile, with two points sticking out almost opposite each other.

Thanks for advice. I've been checking the fluid twice a week. Barely losing fluid. I've put about an ounce in over 2 1/2 weeks. I plan on pulling the axle this weekend. The seal looks ok from a view. You've made me wonder if I put it on too far now. I pressed it on all the way. How far from the hub of the axle should it be before installing?

Just to clarify, the seal is installed in the differential housing, and you won't be able to see the sealing part of the seal until the axle is out. The shield should be fine, it is not what rides on the seal anyway. It's usually recommended to replace axle seals if you are replacing axles. Kind of like cheap insurance, or "why not do it while you're there?" If possible, go with OEM Toyota.
