Need help fellow mudders on my 96 all stock FZJ80.

I have a whinning noise when coasting down the road that seem to be coming from the front diff, axle, drive shaft area.

And it seems to be there even if I put it on neutral so it might not be coming from the trans but I am not sure

Also drained the front diff to service and it seems to be contaminated, the color of the gear oil seems to be greennish.

I have not done any search yet and just wanted to get an opinion really fast.

Any input would be really appreciated, thanks Mudders!

Do you have any more information like does it change with engine speed, road speed, acceleration, turning the steering wheel---. Do some searches for soup+breather or diff+breather, front+axle+service, Power+steering+pump+whine, belts+whine.

It actuallly changes pitch, sound, as I slow down whether in gear or not. Cannot hear it though when I am turning because there is not enough speed.

I did do some search and it might actually be my birf seal for the dark green diff oil that was drained but I am not sure and will do more search based on your suggestions.

Thank you so much Kernal and if anybody else have any suggestion I would really appreciate the help!

my sugestion is to since you have some contamination, pull it apart and repack the birf's and reseal everything , and while you have it apart take a look at the front diff bearings and gears,

Dont know how may miles you have on it but there isn't much there to make a whirling noise, pinion bearings, carrier bearings or wheel bearings ... pulling the front apart will allow you to inspect all of these..

u joints usually vibrate and squeak... and if it was the transfer case output bearings the seals would most likely be leaking...

good luck if all else fails put it on rack/ jack stands (all 4 ) pull the tires and take it up to speed should be easy to isolate that way..

Sounds like I will need to do this, thanks Rayjon.

Oh by the way I have 156k on the clock...

I had a similar noise on my 96 coming from the rear. Went round and round. Pinion sees a little loose but when I but the mud tires on lo and behold no more sound...at least that I can hear.
