Well, in this case, just the diff. I saw no "visible" signs of damage in the t-case.

The diff however...

It just pisses me off that the rear is now making noise and I have to get that addressed.

Toyota claims the front went and while the t-case was still trying to hash it out, broke itself and in turn f'd up the rear.

I guess this system is just one big happy family.

What the hell would cause this? This really sucks.

The front diff looks like the typical broken ring gear that all the 100s seem to get.

The t-case looks fine. Was there any metal on the drain plugs suggesting an internal failure? Is the center diff mangled and we just can't see it? How did they know the t-case was bad?

I also don't buy the theory of the front taking out the rear. That does not ring true.

Great pics though, and I hoe that Toyota will at least help with the front diff, since it's a well known failure point.

From what I could tell, and I'm certainly no expert, the t-case "looked" fine. Who knows how it would act under load. No metal in the plugs.

So you think I blew the rear independently?

I hope Toyota steps up too.

Any documentation that this is a well known case?

Yep, same thing as mine. After I blew the front R&P I tried to nurse it back down the road after getting towed out. The front locked up at 28 MPH and then "hammered" the drivelines right back through the transfer case clipping three ring teeth off the rear diff.
Hate to be the grimm reaper, but your drivelines are probably toast also. Set the drivelines on the bench, and make sure they are still in phase (flanges are equeal) and they have not twisted. I had the front one retubed with a heavier slip yoke, and then just had the rear straightend and balanced.

I feel your pain brother:doh:

wtf man that is horable, i would expect better from toyota engernering the wheeling you were doing should not have caused that

Holy Shyte: I didn't know (or remember ) you took out your rear diff and drive shafts when you did that. Ouch!!!

Mac: That sucks. How much right pedal were you using when all this happened?

Oh, that is some ugly carnage. Mac, I'm just wondering if the crush sleeve on the pinion gear collapsed after that kind of trauma or was it still "tight."

I can't see anything wrong with the transfer case, but it looks like you drove on the front diff for a bit to get it out of the situation. What noise is the rear making? If you are going to keep wheeling the truck, you should put an ARB in the front.

Yeah, the t-case is puzzling. Has me thinking that maybe Toyota just made a decision to replace it without actually being certain it was shot.

The rear is making a whirring sound on coast. Under load it's fine.

Toyota says it's a bearing, but what do I know.

I wish I lived closer to Golden!

You got me. I'm no expert when it comes to this stuff.

A lot. Too much. Was trying to get over this hump.

And it humped me.

Hey Mac, how much skinny pedal were you using? Or should I just sell mine now before it breaks all to hell?

Man, that hurts :crybaby:
I hope the dentist's bill is not too horrible...

The words TOYOTA and Ring & Pinion just don't seem to go together lately. What's going on with Toyota???
