i just received my overhaul kit from cruiser outfitters, but it looks like I didn't make sure to include a new birf seal and the paper gaskets that go on the birf housings. So my questions are:

Is it worth it to order the Marlin HD seal or is it fine to just order the factory seal from Toyota?

Is there anything else I should do while I'm in there?

I will order new tie rods and brake pads in in addition to getting the rotors resurfaced.

I assume you're talking about the inner axle seal. If your axle shows any sign of grooving where the seal runs, its worth getting the marlin crawler hd seal. If you don't have the paper gaskets, you can use FIPG, just takes a bit longer to clean off next time round.

Sorry misspoke... I have the marlin axel seal. i ment knuckle seal. However I went back a rechecked my parts. They did a very good job of packing everything tight. Everything is in there and I feel like a goof.

Still, any recommendations for additional things I should replace at while I'm in there?

Its good idea to completely disasseble the birfield joint to check for wear and repack with new grease. Youll require new axle C-clips as they usually break when seperating the birfs. Its also recomended switching birfs right to left on the axle shafts to extend their life

Good points. I don't recall seeing new c clips.

I have heard completely different regarding the marlin seals.

Make sure i you have lockers to lock them before pulling the axles!
Lots of rags, brake clean are needed. Have fun!
Good read thank you. I will be cautious when installing and give a sitrep as needed. Seems to be mixed reviews. I see that many people are having the issue with AWD applications on the 80. Hopefully I don't run into this.

I do have factory lockers. Thank you for the reminder, I did read it elsewhere. May I ask what the reasoning is?

I run the Marlin axle seals on my BJ74 and leave my hubs locked in a lot durring the winter. It just went 100,000km between knuckle rebuilds... On the other hand I did not the put the Marlin axle seals into my HDJ81 because of all the bad experiences in the 80's forum

I would think twice about the Marlin seals in a full-time 80 only. In a part-time 80 or a 4,5,6,7x variant they are fine.

Try swapping the OEM spring into the Marlin seal.

just looking at the seals I don't think I could pull that off without, at a minimum, compromising the parts... Unless you have some concrete evidance it doable AND effective I doubt I'd try it out.

Been done and tried.
Yes sometimes we have to sacrifice parts.
The Marlin is a decent seal and the OEM spring just makes it better... according to me.
