Ahhhh….quiet FILTERED cabin air that Toyota didn’t want us plebs in Land Cruisers to have—“It’s basically an LX.” (IYKYK)

The AC evaporator was dripping into passenger footwell and annoying my wife, so as a “while you’re in there,” I swapped out the cover with an LX cover, so now I have cabin air filters in my ‘05 Land Cruiser. Win-win!

Nice work - just did this EXACT same thing with my '05. I was hoping for a more satisfying clean-out of debris -- it actually wasn't all that messy. To complete the job, I'm going to be adding a condensation drain extender to keep the drips off the frame.

Nice. I’d call mine 5/10 regarding debris and junk on the coils.

It’s a great upgrade. Not sure what filters you installed but I had found some champion carbon filters that were not very expensive and have work very well in the lc and my lx.

Just bought OE for now.

Got a part number handy you can share?
I’ve got the same leak and need to get it take care off, how long did it take/how big of a PITA was it?
I’ll give you 4 part numbers. The first is the actual gasket just for the leak stop. The other 3 are for the “while you’re in there” conversion.
  • Cooler Packing #1 - 88578-47040
  • Cooler Cover (LX box with cutout) - 88891-60040
  • Cooler Cover (LX removable air filter door) - 88891-60060
  • Cabin Air Filter (x2) - 88568-60010
I wouldn’t call it fun by any means, but compared to how difficult YouTuber tutorials said it was to remove and reinstall the plates, I was relieved—being able to learn from others’ experiences is invaluable.

Patch’s video is good for the beginning of the process:

Chow’s video is a good general overview but doesn’t replace the packing seal:

Pearl’s solely focuses on packing seal but has good tips on efficiently removing & reinstalling the covers:

Best of luck!

Yeah, this is definitely much easier than people make it seem. As long as you have a couple different lengths of drivers, you’ll be fine. The time consuming part can be making sure you vacuum out the core very well and if you wanna spray some coil cleaner in there and hose it out. Cleanliness inside here is important so that the condensate can drip freely from the AC and not back up in the core thereby leaking out of the front seal. Once you get the hose in there, you will know how well the drain is working and can approach it then. I was removing my carpet at the same time so I literally had a hose inside of the core box. Maybe one to two hours the first time you do this, going slowly and carefully. Just make sure you orient the packing correctly and clean out the channel it’s sits in.
