It looks like PPG discontinued paint code 309 (freeborn red) due to being a leaded paint. Does anyone know of a paint code that will give a close match?

Is the PPG a BC/CC? I had a quart of Nason single stage mixed a while back using the colour code, but it was way off my factory 309 ('84 FJ60). It was closer to early 40 series 309's that I could find images of - was very bright with some pink tones. My truck is more orangey-red, not pink-red.

I ended up taking off one of the cover plates at the rear hatch, polished it up and brought it in for a colour analyzer to try to match to an existing colour library. I would try that - it seems the 309 went through several iterations over the years, so what's 309 on your truck might not be what's on mine.

Here's an image of the original match - that didn't match.

Here is my thread asking about Freeborn Red.

Original Freeborn Red is a single stage paint. You can get whatever paint system you want mixed in it really. There will be a lot of variation by brand and by how your original paint has aged. A paint supply store can scan your original and mix to that as well. I did that on @Ocho77 's 60 when it was mine and actually had to tint it some more on my own to get it nice.

I just give factory paint codes to my paint place, they look up the ratios based on what system your getting. Like @dogfishlake says, it’s just a code and can be mixed in any number of formats, bc/cc, single stage... they’d probably make an eggshell interior latex if you asked ;)
