I have a 78 fj40 with some frame rot:frown: (yes i know, big surprise).. The rot is at the front spring perches on both frame rails (again, big surprise:rolleyes:).. The rest of the frame is good and solid.. it's only the front perches of the rear springs that is rotted.. So my question is, since this appears to be a very common problem, is there a common fix:hmm:??????? I realize that it depends on the extent of the rot ( and pictures would help).. Replacing the entire frame is not an option for me... any help would be great... thanks...

Do have pics of the affected area, it'd be easier to give advice after seeing exactly what's up. Ideally(and simply put) it would be good to remove the spring mount brackets, clean up the frame (media blast or wire wheel) then weld in new metal, prep, prime and finally reinstall the spring brackets. It's not a simple task to do a clean job of; Wally(Poor Wallys Cruiser Emporium) does this kind of work regularly.

Gus... thanks for the reply.. i hope to have pics up tomorrow.. it's hard to seek advice when i don't show people what it is i'm asking about... but i do thank you for your insight..

Wally plated mine 8 years ago. I just swapped the frame last year, and his plating was still holding up fine. The rest of my frame was headed, but where he fixed was rock solid. You do have to take the hangers off, as gus mentioned.

ok.. so here is what i am talking about... I know these pictures don't show it all, but it shows what i'm dealing with..

ouch, whats the body look like? I would be afraid of the frame being thin everywhere else.

Ya I hate to say it but I think if I were in your shoes ide be lookin for another frame right about now.

x2

Plating can go so far, but in the end, a new frame is a better choice.

They are available for fair money occasionally.

I would be PMing Kina, he might have one. Post up in the wanted section.

Like wildman said, the rest of the frame is most likely compromised.

Thanks for the words of wisdom everyone... I really do appreciate it... guess I have some shopping to do...

Kina's parting out some 40's right now, call him.
He has a post going in our Parts thread.

What are the reasons that it’s not an option? Do you have the space/time/money/skills? Post up some pics of the rest of the 40. Is it worth saving?
