I'm a fairly new cruiser owner and I got properly stuck today and my 4x4 wouldn't engage. It has engaged in the past. I recently moved to California and and had my emissions worked on so I could pass the smog test. In the process of doing that they had to fix several vacuum leaks. Could there be a connection? I know that the 4x4 is vacuum controlled? Additionally it didn't work in 4 high or 4 low.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I am a total newbie and only a mediocre mechanic.

You have an FJ62 I presume? I cannot personally enlighten you on that rig, but there are plenty on this forum who can, they will need to know specifically what vehicle you have.

I bet the vac line is messed up. Follow the vac lines for the 4 wheel drive from the passenger side firewall to the intake area. If they hooked them up wrong that could cause it ....or it could simply just be off.

You can suck or blow on the line going to the solenoids ..I cannot remember which and it will engage... the solenoid that is.

My guess is also vaccuum related. maybe the solenoid went out (VSV.) Generally the solenoid that disengages the 4WD goes out but in your case it may be the opposite one. Here's my writeup and it shows the position of the VSV's in question.

Since the solenoid we are talking about rearely goes out I would suspect that a vaccuum leak is the primary problem. Second place to look would be the solneoid valve.

Thank you for the input. I recently noticed that the driveshaft is turning? Does that impact the diagnosis?

Unlock the hubs and hit the 4wd button, if you can turn the front shaft by hand (turn the truck off before crawling under) then the 4wd isn't engaging. The front tires will turn the drive shaft regardless of whether it's engaged at the transfer or not, when the hubs are engaged.

Sonoracruiser,
The question you asked about the driveshaft is answered in the link I provided in my first post. It goes through diagnosis of the VSV. Ask more questions and we'll help you figure it out.

Please read at least the first post in this thread:
