Funny, I asked this question of one of our members earlier (like 3 weeks ago). The opinion expressed was that it appeared the CSC efforts @ Fossil Creek were not duly appreciated by the ranger district and alternate locations might be candidates for consideration.

:frown:

Brittan and I just talked about this at lunch. I'm in for something late this month. Cleanup or not I need to get my ass up there for some R&R.

They actually OPENED the area that we normally camped in to be a "LEGAL" camping area since the last time we were up there.

There have been reports of our efforts being wasted, unappreciated, also a couple of our members have had negative experiences there. The recent reports that I have heard, are that the place is clean, is getting plenty of attention from other groups.

Bigger in my mind, is what are we trying to accomplish? Being a wheeling club, I would prefer to make a difference in a wheeling area, there is little, none of that at Fossil Creek. The way it has been explained to me is: We clean Fossil Creek real nice and it gives ammo to the other side; see, areas where wheeling isn't allowed stay clean, look at this area where wheeling is allowed, it's trashed. Agree that the goal is to help make a difference over political, but if we can do both even better. Especially with the pressures that are happening now.

I have been working with Tonto, they would appreciate some help are working on some suggestions. The first proposed is Queen Valley/Montana Mountain. Need to make a run out there and see what is needed, if it is a good fit for us? Totally open to suggestion, there are plenty of areas that can use help, but would prefer to coordinate it with Tonto.

Everything is changing, at one time you could travel/explore at will, this is going to be a thing of the past soon. Having a good relationship with the forest service will have some advantages? For example; some of the fire areas have been closed for a longtime, some areas have somewhat recovered from the fire. There is an evaluation group going in to see what to do, I tried to snag some spots in the group for us, but this group was full by the time I heard.

It's good to hear about this stuff, but would be better if we were closer, so get the call sooner. One of the sites rumored to be coming up is trail 42, I said we are in, would love to be the first to attempt to run it.

Lots things in the forest service are being overhauled/changed. One example is the adopt a trail program, it has been reset. The last I heard the only trail assigned is, Sunflower Mine to Honeywell 4wheelers. I purpose that we become more "official" in this regard, pick a trail or trails that we are willing to be responsible for maintaining.

There are currently a couple of temporary obstacles. The travel management plan isn't complete, so picking a closed trail would be counterproductive? This is projected to be better nailed down in December "ish"? This requires being an "official" volunteer group, paperwork is involved, I'm working on that now and a better description of what is expected/required, scope of work.

I think Tools has some great points when we stop and look at what were trying to accomplish. Sure, we feel good about what we do (and should). I think it also is a positive to go to a nice area like that and camp out with our CSC compadres and do some bonding :D. It makes for a great time.

Being a 4wheeling club, we might as well use our efforts in an area that is less popular with the clean up groups and help our cause at the same time. Self serving? Hell ya! but still good at the same time. If we do something lower in elevation we could alway move the date farther out where the camping (important - like BMan, we all need some decompress time) would be nice and temperate.

I think people like Tools, Inkpot, and others who are involved alot with the Forrest service could develop some good input.

I strongly vote for the adopt a trail idea. Some research and exploring would be in order for this adoption. Maybe it is time to grow in this direction.

There is no reason that any of our efforts need to be done in a s*** hole, if it is, we clean it, then it no longer is. There are plenty of great places with nice camping that need attention.

There is no reason that we cant have a desert trail and a forest trail or more, summer and winter places. But I propose that we start with a Tonto, more specifically Mesa district trail. They have been receptive, have good contacts, so will make the "getting our feet wet" part easy. My thought is a relatively easy, short, close to the valley trail to start. If it's our thing, expand to other places?

Agree, it (they) will need to be trail(s)/area(s) that we enjoy, will need to run them several times a year, report on condition and be proactive on any work needed. After all we would want "our" trail(s) to be the finest in all of "traildom", not that it would be a competition or anything.:hillbilly:

Im game ...as for Montana Mountain I like that area mostly because it has always been clean. The only area I can think of is the beginning at Queens Valley again mostly shooters mess. Do you know what area they feel needs help? That area would give us as a 4WD club good exposure because FR172/FR172A services a very popular hiking area that gives access to some cliff dwelling and apple orchard.

I attempting to get clarification, possibly GPS on sites that need attention. My understanding is that it's mainly shooter and dispersed camping/partying sites in the Hewett Canyon area. The rock cabin could also use some attention, it's over on the Globe Ranger District side, not that it matters?

So back to the original question... No cleanup at Fossil Springs? Then what weekend are we camping Josh? I'm down for late in the month as per the usual cleanup. Kids are jonesin' for some camping and swimming. I'm sure Brittan is down and hell, I might even talk John into an appearance.

I should be down too depending on the weekend I have a wedding that I have to go to at the end of the month but I would love to make it!

We're down too as long as it's not the same weekend as a Cardinals home game. (Flame suit on) Still on the bandwagon and the $$ is already spent. I'll bring the Knob Creek. Not to be confused with Noob Creek for those first timer campers with the group.

Murf- you had me at bonding.

I'm game too, but I'll be out of town for a wedding on the weekend of Sept. 24th. I'm pretty open around then.

I am wide open, just need a couple weeks to set up work accomodations - Regardless of club involvement, if I go up there I am bringing a s***load of garbage back with me...its just the right thing to do.

Bring the RC again...sweet!

No one that has camped with you will be confused:flipoff2:

I'm game to meet at/pick you up and go to the Tonto Ranger Office in the daytime if it will help pinpoint areas for project nomination. Unfortunately, they have lousy hours of operation, so they are closed when most consumers are available to visit. John
