I'm planning to install a snork and wondered if any of you used the plastic hole inserts (that plug into the A-pillar). I heard that these are crap. I read that using nutserts hold up much better. Have any of you used these nutserts or something similar over the supplied plastic ones? Although i don't suspect any drawbacks with the plastic ones, nutserts sound more durable. Thoughts?

does it really matter if you are just going for looks?

I have a snorkel and it's not attached to the A-pillar. I bought it used and the original bolts were broken off in the threads of the snorkel. Its on my "one of these days" list. I would probably go with installing nutserts when I do it or just welding nuts onto the A-pillar.

They have aluminum nutserts too

That will corrode even more with steel bolts and set in steel.

fwiw - snorkels suck.

Well, they literally suck, but figuratively too. If you use them, they get you into trouble. You drive into places you have no business being.

On the road you will be constantly pestered by people who want to know why your exhaust comes out your fender. People will yell at you going down the highway. You will not be able to pump gas in peace.

I would never put one on a truck again.

Ditto

Its like buying an umbrella and thinking that you can now safely jump off of large buildings

I saw an '03+ 100 series at a starbucks in naperville this past weekend and it had the works ARB'd w/ roof rack + snorkel, and i was 1 car ahead of him in drive-thru.
he had me faded.

Hopefully gettin this truck in order, in time for jambo.

Roof rack is key. You can only be considered hardcore if you have a roof rack. Otherwise you are just the same as the douche bags that drive subaru foresters

...boring

ya i'm pretty serious. not sayin you would want to but, you wouldn't know 'less you had a 100, in all of its IFS glory.

Roof racks sound pretty useful to have, but I guess I just haven't been in the 'game' long enough to know any better.

But thanks for the replies guys.

I would just use the plastic ones that it came with. I can see the strength advantage to the nutserts, but I think of the plastic ones as sort of a fuse. I would rather have the plastic break off then the added stress to the A pillar if confronted with something pulling on it. I kind of like Erwin’s idea of no connection at all, I don’t like the idea of making holes in the A pillar. But it’s not the end of the world if you do.

I would recommend you getting sliders first, or maybe bumpers. A roof rack is an excellent choice for added storage capacity and you have kids so that would be beneficial for your use.

If you are doing anything for looks, consider function first, the looks would come with that anyways.

Another thing, pick up an extra fender from someone parting out a 100. Doesn't matter if its the same color, thats what paint is for. Its easier to drill into an extra one knowing you can easily change back to the original one if you decide to go back.

This is the deepest I've gone with my snorkel, just above the tires crossing the creek at the cliffs. I have to admit though it can make you stupid sometimes. I wanted to cross the creek one time after heavy rain even though Tom decided to go around.

The snorkel doesn't disconnect your fan. It will hit the water, possibly bend, and certainly throw water all over your plug wires and cap. The snorkel doesn't do anything to keep the water out of your diffs, transfer case or trans vents either.

u r no fun

Great point on the pulling bit Scott. I reviewed your snork install and dig the vacuum hose insert you used.

BTW, there is a new snorkel design for the 100 from Safari and allows the owner to retain the antenna mast in its original location but requires either cutting or indenting the snork to clear the antenna. Did you do this to yours?

Erwin, that would be great but I'm SOL with a 100 being parted out right now. Hard to find...
