I believe that's the same Road & Track article that's linked on our Facebook page on Dec 24. The owner says he lost money when it sold for $198K. Check out our FB page, there's a lot of good LC articles.
The owner/builder should work for the government with his ability to skew numbers. I read the piece and he did things like have a mold made to make the rubber molding for the doors.. He factored the cost of having the mold made into the cost of the build. The cost of premium molding is one thing, factoring in the reusable tooling does not work. He also mentioned doing the same with some motor parts.
That truck sold at about $180K. If you do the real math I am sure he did just fine. I know that there are some very specific parts for that truck but I know what it costs to go through all the basics and repair/replace.
