? for the board . How hard is it to take one of these over the border. I don't think registering it would be a problem here in Colorado. Maybe easier to meet FairLadyZ in Montana ?

I bet you WILL have problems registering in CO. This whole nationwide DOT computer system is screwing up the small town rural state loop holes that previously sort of existed.

I dunno what registering is like down there? There are so many freaking RHD's here that its normal and no one at the reqisty blinks an eye at us.

As for Montana..haha I've never even been there! It would definately be a road trip.

I haven't heard of this. Any links or information.

It's only a short drive. I was as far north as Edmonton on my summer vacation but all I got to see of Calgary was rush hour traffic when you had the flooding in early June. Not exactly the best time to visit.

It would be nice to make your vehicle available to a market of 300 million diesel starved souls. :grinpimp:

The last time I went into my local DMV to register something the ladies were complaining that they had this new DOT system. They said it was pretty neat as far as the information it provided. They could see titles from other states, VIN history, etc... Almost like Car Fax. She joked that I wouldn't have been able to get a title for my BJ60 now with the new system as it only accepts VINS that are already entered in the system. Being my BJ was from Canada and never imported into the US those sets of VINS were not entered. A registered importer can get the VINS added to the system if it meets the US requirements. Search on the 25 year rule. So it isn't just a matter of going in with the Canadian registration papers and getting a title in the US. But it can be that easy if the VIN shows a current US EPA number and DOT safety inspection. So like importing a newer Ford truck wouldn't be that big of deal. Best bet is to go down to you local DMV and ask about the procedures. Although there are federal laws the enforcement is left up to the local licensing agencies. There is still a good way to get a RHD vehicle in if it meets DOT and EPA standards and is not 25 years old. Rural Postal Delivery vehicles can be imported for mail carriers. but there are restrictions on how and when they can sell these.

What are the restrictions of importing a vehicle from Japan? I know in Canada all vehicles imported from out of North America have to be 15 years or OLDER to th exact month of production date before they can enter Canadian Customs..I think its dumb..but I dont make the rules!

If it's got a 17 digit vin, I can get you a TN title for it. If it has less I can possibly still get one but it may have to reflect as an older model vehicle. (before they went to 17 digit vins)

That's got to be one of the coolest toyotas I've seen.

It doesn't matter what state you title it in. It is getting the proper paper work at the border crossing when you import it to title it in the US that is the trick. Vehicle must have paper work verifying that it meets DOT standards or is over 25 years in age. Title transfer from Canada with out that is impossible with out using some other dubious method.

Might be possible if the right friend at the border was cultured....maybe!;)

Any way have found most Montana border crossing personel to be real grumps and they take their jobs way to seriously. Oh well keeping our US backsides protected.

Good Day!

Josh

I think a Canadian on a short vacation could easily drive the vehicle across the border. If they were offered a fair price for the vehicle they might sell on a whim and take a bus back.

Once in the US there are many established and legal methods of titling vehicles with confused/or missing VIN histories. Once you've done a mod to Canadian parts at your shop it may start to qualify as a homebuilt/custom machine at least in "good" states.
