As the Toyota diesel was never imported to the US it wont be smog legal in Calif. Going from a gaser to diesel of any kind is not going to be a walk in the park for smog in Calif ether about the same as a LS swap

Are you sure about that?!

We have completed multiple Toyota diesel conversions and all of them are CA legal.

Please don't post "info" like that unless you're 100% certain. There's way too much mis-information floating around on the net and this doesn't help.

Not trying to come off like an a$$, just making sure people have the proper facts.

That has precious little to do with "deep pockets", it's all about knowing the vehicle code and what's possible/legal here in CA.
OK my bad, Please enlighten me !!! As far as I know there's no way to get a coast - effective diesel swap in Calif. My Guess is that a diesel swap in your shop is in access of 30k, to me that deep pockets. I never said it was impossible.
Born and raised Calif. Cheers

"Cost effective" is a pretty broad term. I guess it all depends on your budget and mechanical ability in case you're ( or anybody else is ) thinking about doing the conversion yourself.
I think the most "cost effective way" to perform a diesel swap into the 80-series platform is to buy a diesel parts donor rig in Canada and tear into it.

Your "guess" is close. Most specialty shops tha5t perform diesel swaps charge a minimum of $20-25k in parts and labor, but that really depends on application, engine, trans and accs.

Not sure why you mentioned "born and raised in Ca" but that's not so common these days .........

Hope that helps.

Georg

PS: Born and raised in Austria, but living in CA.

Thank you Georg, The born and raised part is I am not a cali hater & at 62 years of age I have been around Calif smog laws a long time. Sourcing and installing a diesel is only half the equation, getting it smog legal in Calif is the hard part. And in my opinion makes it not cost effective.
The OP is in LA Calif and state that he well never have to smog again by going diesel , I just wanted him to see the big picture.
Cheers

I hear ya.
In all reality, making the diesel conversion "smog legal" is the simplest ( and CHEAPEST ) part of the job at hand.
The short story is: Once you're done with the conversion, you make an appointment at the local DMV for a vehicle inspection. You have to bring the vehicle and pink slip. At that point, you fill out a "statement of facts" and a "repower certificate". The DMV rep[presentative will inspect the vehicle, confirm the VIN# ( in all 3 spots ) and then confirm that it's now a diesel. They'll fill out the statement of facts showing "D" as fuel type, not "G". Then you pay $45 and 3-4 weeks later you get a new pink slip, showing it's a diesel ........ and since all 80s are pre-1998, you're now "exempt from emissions testing" here in CA.

The end.

Like I said...Georg has the process all figured out. Class act @orangefj45 sharing your process with everyone here.
