Why exactly would you want to fold down the windshield when you are wheeling?

1. I broke a windshield from a tree limb on one of my first trips out.....small limb too
2. Less chance, if you do go over, of ruining your frame and glass.
3 I love the vision and the air in my face, never wheel with mine up anymore, in fact I have not had the knobs installed in years, just a bungie cord to keep it up if I need to.

thats why i put it down

I think the fold down design also has to do with making the vehicle more compact for use as military cargo. They take up less space and you can haul more of them in the same cargo space.

I was shocked to find out that you can be ticketed if you drive with the windshield down and are not wearing goggles or safety glasses. Usta drive my CJ with top down and WS folded down all the time. I guess it is state by state. Still looks cool.

That's IDave's '40 with the 50cal. Its a 40/50. heh.

First time I really needed to drop the windshield was due to dust and the rising sun making me blind.

I never thought about saving the windshild in a rollover - Thanks Texican!

It does make it more trouble to check under the hood :) And if you get tired of the sun on all of you all day long, it's nice to have an option for covering. I rigged up a bikini header that will attach to the front of the cage, so as to keep myself from roasting.

Ive never put mine down, I alsays had the thought of "Dumb and Dumber" when they are riding the tote goat on the highway....GULP.
We havent done any real slow run's yet, There are alot of wide open dirt roads inbetween some of the harder spots.
I will have to give it a shot when im going solo ie. no kid's or wife. ;)
Have fun

I only do it cuz a jeep guy said he thought it was stupid.

I also got questioned by the police (upstate NY). He said I needed glasses for me and passengers, and both side mirrors.

Like the man said, different in every state.

bikini top holds mine back in the 68...the lemon had a bracket welded to the rollbar just below the bikini channel that matched a bracket on the w/s frame and i just dropped a bolt in it.

just remember to have really good glasses when you hit the highway...magoo and i had a blast running to boulder with tears streaming down our faces :D

You fold the windshield down so the branches spare the glass to destroy your face (chicks dig scars, and the pirate look).

I was thinking about the other post about folding to aid in military loading. What difference does it make if you fold the windshield and the rollbar sits the same height?? Do military 40s not have rollbars? If I got a military 40, could I stack them one on top of the other, like to free up some space in the garage?? OK, I'm a smartass. Bye, Hodag

According to a friend of mine, and a Jeep historian the old willy style military jeep had the folding window for the shipping reason, minus the roll bar. Something about how many you could ship in a train car or something. Plus theres rumors about original military jeeps still literally in the box in various warehouses.
I figure when the 40's were designed there was a practical application to the folding window, having a hard top on mine I dont think Ill be laying down the glass any time soon. Its just a pain to take it off...and im lazy!

BTW those little wires that you see on most landrovers etc. are there just for that branch in the face reasoning. Seem to work good in the woods here anyhow.

I have torn off a windshield frame and taken out the glass on two different occasions.
In the tight trails of the northeast, I can't tell you how many times I have seen someone leaning on a trail with a tree up against/behind/just in front of the windshield. Can't back up without bending the frame...
Not worth it.

And there is no need for the silly little screws if you get a pre-68 windshield setup with the big ol hooks and levers.
