Ok flushing the rad right now. is there a spot to drain it from the block as well? And I remember somone saying somthing about burping it when im done?(how do ya do that one?)
thanks for all the help...if ya know please post up because I am in the middle of doing it ;)
Thanks

yep, there is a drain cock(hehehe) on the driveside of the block, kinda towards the back of the block, recall its a 14mm bolt. Best to get at it from underneath or thru the wheelwell.

yes when your doing refilling the system, park the cruiser nose up on a hill, leave the rad cap off, turn both heaters on high and let it run for a while, rev it up every once in a while.

I flush my cruisers when running, stuff a hose in the rad and let it run out of the rad and block drain untill it runs clear, can take quite awhile.

When you run it with the waterhose in the fill neck of the radiator, do you just let all the excess coolant and junk run out into the gutter? The reason I ask is that I am in the process of doing this now also, so I am just wondering. Should you fill up the rad and block with the waterhose before you start the truck? Is it bad to start the truck without anything in the rad and block?
Would it be that bad to just drain the coolant from the rad and block and then just refill it with fresh coolant?

Thanks for helping a noob

Yeah we are all guilty of allowing the old coolant into the gutter unless you got a way of collecting it and recycling.

Dont start the motor without coolant in there, its bad practice and there is no reason to .

Reread landpimps post about refilling.

The longer you run water through the motor ,the more crapyou get out

Just a side note.

I always refill my rad with distilled water. That way you don't get calium and other water deposit build up. Kinda like a shower that hasn't been cleaned. I get the distilled free, so I have a advantage, but it doesn't cost much at the groc. store.

Thanks for the posts guys. I flushed the rad and it ran clear after the second flush. I drain my coolant into 5 gallon buckets and drop it off a auto parts shop. They take it for free. We only have one mother earth, better not mess with her.

How about additives to get a better flush ? I've heard using CLR (calcium, lime, rust)Bathroom Cleaner but have no first hand experince ? Comments ?

Cheers,
Cahil

I did use additives. ill check the bottle then.

the fuel gauge is no longer working after i hooked up the tank. What gives? any ideas?

I tryed that. even tryed flipping the truck. also dint work.

use iced tea to flush the rad then grease up the face of the woman behind the regester at publix and eat potato chips mmmm chips

I use 2 different Prestone products(depending on how bad it is), one is a mild flush, the other is some kinda 2 part acid(I think its muric) and you must put the nutralizer in(think its backing soda) it reeally seems to work well. Think muric acid is also in drain cleaner.......

I have gone to distilled as well, I have lots of minerals in my water. So for the last flush I stop the motor, let it cool and drain it all, then refill with distilled and red juice.

you don't want to add cold water to a hot block, if you must do so run the motor and fill........or at least that is the old wifes tail.

I try my best now to catch the old anti freeze, then for the long running flush I just let it run out on the dirt/gravel as its almost all just water, but I keep a small pan under it only so I can see how clean/dirty the crap is coming out.

Thanks for the clarification Pimp,
I don't want to beat this to death, but I'm still confused as to what I should do next.
This project originally started as a simple thermostat replacement, drain and refill. But after I saw the condition of all the hoses decided to replace them while everythign was drained. Now my truck is sitting with no coolant in the rad, lines, or block. What would the best next step be?

1. Could I run a hose over to the rad neck fill it up until starts backing back out, open both drain cocks, start the engine, run wuth both heaters on hot, and let it flush everything out. When the water runs clear, turn the waterhose off, drain the excess water, close the drain cocks, and fill the system back up new coolant through the rad. spout?
OR
2. Could should I just fill the system up with fresh coolant through the rad. spout until it is full, start the engine, and burp the system?

Thanks for helping a noob,
Chris

can do either 1 or 2. If it never been flushed I would do 1

resurrecting this thread.....

landpimp mentioned toyota red antifreeze and i'm a little worried. i'm replacing my waterpump and while draining the coolant it's obviously not red. prestone something or other who knows.

1) is there something particularly bad about the yellow stuff and can i do anything about any damage already done?

2) will there be an incompatibility problem with the red stuff when i change over?

3) regarding draining the block.... 1 drain cock or 2?

4) once the fliuid coming out of the drain(s) runs clear you then drain the radiator again, and the block and fill with the red stuff and distilled water, correct?

thanks

i am speaking from a 3FE on this --

(1) the yellow stuff isn't bad, from what i understand, but the red is just better

(2) if you do a thorough hose-flush for 10 mins, you should be fine, since you'll have 100% red in then -- mixing colors can lead to sludge --

(3) 1 drain on the block (LH side) and one on the rad bottom (butterfly)

(4) do this -- open the block and rad stops, drain fluid, dispose of, put a hose in the rad, have a buddy sit in the driver seat of truck, turn hose on full, turn truck on, turn heaters on high, watch temp (should be ultra low), after 10 minutes, flush through with distilled, close stops, fill with distilled/red mix --
