Savannah had some serious rain fall last night. It was also high tide, so there were flooded streets all over town, thus there were stalled cars all around town. My wife and I were safe in the Cruiser... we made it through some pretty deep water. Then we had to pick up a couple of friends who were stuck... more deep water.

So this morning I try to put the wagon in reverse and get grinding. I let off the clutch, depress it again, try reverse again, get grinding. I did this a few more times with no luck. Finally I depressed the clutch pedal about 10-15 times in a row, then tried it. It went into gear easily and rode fine all the way to work.

My question: Did it do this because it was immersed in water for a while last night? That is all I could think of. It has never done this before and this was my first "water adventure" in the 60.

If this is your first experience with deep water, I doubt you were prepared.

If you had not previously extended your differential (axle) breathers you can be garunteed of having water in your differentials. You'll need to drain and re-fill. Now would be a good time to also extend those breathers up into a higher location, eg: engine bay or rear D-Pillar.

The transmission and transfer case both also have breathers, IIRC, and you probobly have water in both of those as well.

I'd go through it and drain/fill all your fluids. excluding the rad and oil. Then take a weekend and extend all of your breathers.

I've done this on my 80, but have yet to do it on the 60.

It's fun to go water fording though, isn't it! I love motoring through it when others are stuck!

Hmmm. OK. Thanks, Doc. I have not extended any breathers, but I will put that on my list of stuff to get done. There's never a dull moment with these beasts, that is for sure. We are in the middle of hurricane warnings, so this weekend is gonna be a wet one.

haha yeah i just finshed running all my breathers last week..had some pics going thru a moderate water holes. what ive heard even tho you have may have a breather running of your tranny/t-case when its nice and hot from running around as soon as it hits cool water it will like to suck it in.

statts might as well run to napa and get some 1/4inch hose and some small fuel filters. it will only cost ya a few bucks. and for the grinding in reverse. my truck has done that ever since ive had it. i think i read somewhere. that if ya hold in the clutch for 9 seconds and then do it and it still grinds then i think ya have a problem. i dont know can anyone back e up on this?

Lowtide... please explain the 1/4 inch hose and fuel filter thing. I am a doofus.

Nice pic.

i bet that water holes gonna be up to my roof after this hurrican.

ok the 1/4 inch hose goes right over the nipple that stock breathers are on. you pull the stock breathers off and put the 1/4 hose over the nipple thing :) then run the hose up to the engine bay and attach a small fuel filter to keep out dirt and water. you can get them for like 2 bucks. mine were clear and about an inch long. ya just got to make sure that filter also fits the 1/4inch hose. and pick up some small hose clamps to attach the hose to the nipple and the fuel filter.

There are a couple of write ups on extending your breathers, but I'll give you the short version.

Find the stock breather. Remove it and the associated frame rail mounting bracket.

You can re-use the mounting bracket if you like. I pulled the stock breather tube out of the bracket and shoved the new one in through the existing hole. Leave a nice sized loop for axle articulation, like it has stock. The more lift you have, the more loop you'll need.

I used about 8 feet of 1/4 fuel line on my front diff breather for my 80, then ran it up into the engine bay by the fuse box. I used a crankcase style vent filter (like a very small K&N filter) instead of a fuel filter, but it's all pretty much the same.

Zip tie the line to something so it stays where you put it, and dont' run it by moving parts, ie, belts, fans, etc..

It's not terriably difficult, it just takes some time.

just run it the lengh of your brake line. beacuase if ya snap that off ya got bigger probs than a lil water in your diff.

Hey Lowtideride,
not to highjack the thread here, but the ARB is a really nice improvement to your front end compared to your last bar....nice add :D

jhstatts,

You might be lucky like I was and the factory breathers might still be there. Front & back. If you don't re-use them ... save'em because they are hard to obtain, hence most use fuel filters as a replacement.

grinding ...

If I'm in neutral for a bit and let the tranny spin up and then shift fast into gear I grind. Worst when going into reverse. Hence, I hesitate when comming out of neutral into gear, especailly reverse, letting the syncro's line up ? Little or no grinding.

FWIW,

Mine always gives me a bit of resistance going into R. Sometimes it'll clash (sounds like
grinding, but not quite as bad). I find that shifting into a forward gear, usually 2nd, then into
reverse makes everything line up better.
I can't remember if the H-42 is synchronized in reverse or not.
I do know that my blocking rings are wearing and my tranny is due for a rebuild soon. It's
starting to do the same thing going into 1st from a dead stop.

Cool pics, lowtide. Your truck looks great.

Mine has never had the resistance going into any gear, but it has done the "clash" on a few occasions. Do you guys have noisy transmissions? Sometimes I can hear when mine is taken from one gear to the next. I really need to have my tranny and t-case looked at soon (and my driveline).

Did you try to put into any other gears ?
I have had the clutch disc stick to the flywheel with just a tiny bit of rust. it will brake loose after a few times of using the clutch.
I have this happen to my FJ40 after letting it sit after driving through deep water.
I have also had this happen to my vette after it sat all winter .
