I know you all must have talked about this before, but my fzj80 has a flaring problem. I know it's common, but can it be fixed? and how?

It's the stock tranny, i don't know the model number. I would like to fix it rather than buy a new one. Am I just sh__ out of luck?

If it's the older tranny found in the pre 95 models, some guys have had solenoid problems. If that's the case then try a search on solenoid author= cruiserdan. He has had a problem with his and has posted several times detailing the different symptoms from the different solenoids in there.

Mama,

I'll guess that someone's already looked at it and provided you with the "flaring" diagnosis. What did they say was the problem? Also, it's useful to know the year/engine/miles and any relevant history (repairs, etc) to help diagnose the problem.

thanks for your advice to talk to cruiserdan. I'm sure he gets tired of answering everyone's questions...just thought someone else might have some insight.

It's hard to get someone on the east coast (virginia) to know how to diagnose much less fix these rigs. Not going to take it to Toyota dealer, and where I live (rural) good mechanics are not a commodity. We've just had the problem described as "flaring" and common on the FZJ's. It has approx. 175k miles, 45K of which are on a new Toyota engine, it has the safari turbo and blitz timer. I don't know if that makes the flaring seem worse than it really is.

ain't & others - gee, thanks for the mod workout  ;)

ain't - not many good places here on the east coast for something like that. Def plenty of sham shops though, so be carefull where you go. Does everything else seem ok with the transmission? Ok in reverse? Did the problem exist before the turbo (assuming you owned it then?). No hesitation between any other gears?

http://www.automatictransmission.com.au is Rodney's website. He is an Australian transmission rebuilder. He loves to jabber about transmissions and is glad to provide remote diagnosis and repair info via email.

He is quite familiar with Land Cruiser transmissions, and is not at all difficult to work with.

Thanks Rich. I'll get in touch with Rodney. We just bought the rig 2 months ago, so not sure if it was there before Turbo. It was worked on and pre-cert checked out by slee. Flaring is the only prob. with the truck......and the weakass factory horn.

I had a horn problem. The horn is grounded through it's housing to the mount and then through the mount to the frame. Wire brushed everything down and it's louder than ever. Not Mack truck loud but quite an improvement over what it had been. Might take your husband 15 minutes to take it apart and clean everything up. It's worth a try.

thanks for the advice. We'll give it a try.....I really would like a Mack truck horn though. :)

Likely this is going to be a simple adjustment. However since the year is apparently still top secret information despite directly asking for it, there's little to go on. I'm starting to think Mama is Junk toying with us. Bets?

Sorry Doug, a minor oversight.....It's a 93.

Try shortening the tranny kickdown cable a bit. You'll find it at the throttle cable connection atop the engine at rear. Shorten the cable that heads down to the transmission by only a single thread revolution or two at a time. Drive a while between adjustments to see what's been accomplished.

Obviously, this assumes the tranny is properly full of fresh tranny fluid. If not, or unknown, change it out by simply opening the drain on the bottom, then replacing it with 6 quarts of fresh via the dipstick tube (need a special $4 funnel for this tiny opening) for a partial change. Do NOT let someone do a 100% fluid exchange, or worse any kind of tranny flush/cleaning.

My '93 has has "flared" for about a hundred thousand miles. Maybe I should care. Not too worried about it at this point.

THANKS DOUG. Just the advice I was looking for. We'll change fluid first to see if it makes a difference, then do adjustments. You make it sound so easy :) . Any pics of your 93FZJ posted? I'd love to see it!
