Anyone ever heard of this method? I read about it the other day.

1. Drain all ATF from drain plug
2. Refill with the same amount of new ATF
3. Disconnect the AT cooler return hose at the return point to the tranny
4. Connect a clear plastic hose to this hose and run it into a gallon milk jug
5. Start engine and idle. Fluid in the torque converter and cooler will be pumped out.
6. Add more fluid to the tran as fluid is pumped out
7. When fluid is brigh red (new) stop
8. Recheck ATF level

lots on the archives on similar techniques...

That the same method used to flush a TH350. Sounds easy enough. I think you want to give it about 3 seconds in each gear to flush the various valve passages as well.

I did flush my tranny not too long ago, search under my name and you will see the thread. :D

How hard is it to overfill the trans doing this? I'm thinking about getting a BIG fill bucket.

We've used that method many times over the years in vehicles without torque converter drain plugs, works fine. Just don't allow the trans to run dry

Did mine yesterday. Some points:

- Didn't know how much came out of the drain hole, so I put the plug back in and just added six quarts.

- Removed grill and hose clamp on upper trans cooler line. Easy to do if you have one of those really long thin-nose pliers that has an offset nose, just spin the clamp ears around to the front where they're easy to get to.

- Then I disconnected the upper hose from the trans cooler and pressed on 4' of 5/16" ID clear non-reinforced clear PVC hose. BE CAREFUL REMOVING THE FACTORY HOSE FROM THE TRANS COOLER TUBE, the aluminum tube is very soft and you can feel it bend a bit as you try to work off the rubber hose. Ran the clear hose into a 5 gallon bucket.

- Then I ran the engine for 20 seconds, turned it off, and added two more quarts. Did this over and over until I had 14 empty ATF bottles total. For the next six bottles I slowly rowed through the shifter positions. (note that for my idle RPM 20 seconds isn't quite long enough to pump two quarts, so for two cycles I only added one quart to keep from overfilling)

- Buttoned everything up and did a final top-off. I went through 20 quarts total, so I'm pretty confident I got most of the old fluid out. When I started I made a spot with the old fluid on a paper towel, then made a spot with new fluid next to it. Quite a difference in color. As I cycled the fluid I made new spots for comparision. When done the fluid coming out of the cooler was pretty darn close to what the new stuff out of the bottle looked like.

:D
