Problems, need help
Greetings,

I´m a newbie on here as i´ve just bought a 1997 fj80 4.2TD.

I would appreciate some advice as i´ve a few issues i need to resolve. Firstly, the performance is very poor. Ive just taken the car for a service and the shop fiddled with the engine as they said the emmissions were too high!! As a result of their tinkering, the performance now is s***e! How can i make some adjustments to correc this and improve the performance??

What else can be done to improve this also?

The second issue i have is with ride height. I bought the vehicle for remote solar power installations, which invariably involve carrying 500kgs of batteries over bad terrain, so i need to raise the height a bit. What is the cheapest and easiest way of acheiving this?

Thanks for any help in advance,

Scot

Sounds like it is an HDJ80, likely a Euro market vehicle with a 1HD-FTE 24 valve turbo diesel. For some reason, Wayne, outside of Japan Toyota does not call their diesel 80's the HDJ81 or the HZJ81. I know the JDM brochures all call them the 81.

Is it possible if they turned the fuel down to reduce black smoke? Try another diesel shop to have it retuned.

Scot, try posting your question here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/80scool/ . You do have to sign up for the list and get a moderator's approval to join but the 80 knowledge there is quite high. They may be able to direct you as to how to turn the fuel up and what are your suspension lift options. I heard the 80 series is one of the Landcruisers that are the cheapest and easiest vehicles to lift.

I´ve tried to register for this group twice but not had any replies yet, and this was 3 weeks ago!! It is the 24V 4.2TD version, and yes i guess they could have turned the fuel down, but how do i increase it again?, where is the fuel screw'

Scot, honestly I do not have any vehicles with the 24 valve 4.2TD. Glancing at the manual it seems you need an electronic tester for most diagnostics. There may not be a fuel screw but some electronic ECU to control fuel delivery?

Sorry,
Dave

Scott, I too have an HDJ-80 but it's here in California :)

Here's a tech link that may help http://www.lcool.org/technical/80_series/1hdft_pump_adj.html

Check your air filter too, see if it's plugged or something. Also the fuel filter too.
