It starts fine in the winter, even at -40, here in alaska. But when summer comes around, it takes a good couple tries to get it moving. The PO(my father actually) said that its started doing this ever since he replaced the fuel pump. I was wondering, is the fuel pump the culprit, or could it be the fuel filter? Also, if I replace the fuel pump, should I go with stock or is there a better kind to go with? Or is this just totally off, and its not the fuel pump at all? Like I said before, it hesitates in the summer, and you gotta pump the gas pedal to get her started. Thank in advance for any help

The list of potential culprits is long. A bad pump, faulty pressure regulator, defective injector, crap in your gas line. And more. Hope you're a better mechanic than I am. Or you could take it to your trusty, corner autoshop. minus forty? Brrrr. Sounds like Fairbanks.

Yup, fairbanks it is. I might try replacing the fuel pump and filter and see if that does it, I'm hessitant to take it to the Toyota dealer though, the one here really sucks. Don't know of anyone else that would do it, I guess I'll have to look around.

If it were me, I'd check the fuel pressure first. Definitely don't take it to the dealer. They're invariably ripoffs. I would think that most shops in your area would be competent enough to fix it. If not, drive down to Juneau. We've got an old german pro who knows his stuff and happens to drive a 62 himself, along with an old Mercedes.

IT'S THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR.

The FPR is failing closed, raising the fuel pressure, causing the fuel pump to fail, and trying to make the new one fail. I know of at least three other FJ62's with either starting problems or rough idle problems that were cured completely and immediately with a new FPR.

See this thread where I finally figured it out, after replacing the fuel pump and fuel pressure pulsation dampener on my truck:

F'ING FPR! >:( The FPR is an Achilles Heel of the 3FE and IMHO SHOULD BE REPLACED AS ROUTINE MAINTENANCE EVERY 100,000 MILES OR SO, AND IS THE PRIMARY SUSPECT IF YOU HAVE A 3FE THAT STARTS HARD WHEN WARM OR HAS A ROUGH IDLE. I HAVE SPOKEN.

I humbly submit that my old thread linked above should be in the FAQ.

sounds like a plan. I don't have all the symptoms you did, going to try replacing fuel pump. found out he replaced the fuel pump with some cheepo napa s***, gonna go get an OEM and replace if, if that does get it, that fuel pressure regulator is next ;)

Do you know why your dad originally replaced the fuel pump? NAPA parts are OK. Let us know how it turns out.

old one died I think, I remember when this happened, thought it was the fuel line first, started a damn engine fire trying to heat it up, going to do the pump as soon as breakup is over, I don't wanna get wet! might try to do lift, oil pan gasket, and fuel pump at the same time. Might as well, anyway, I'll post back up once done, I think that should fix it, I hope :D

62 fuel pump either works or it does not. I have not seen it "sorta" work. When mine went out it just would not start one day. If you are getting interminnet hard starts it is not the pump. Measure fuel pressure on both sides of the filter first. The pump is a PITA to change out. It could be the pump relay but then it would act like the pmp is not working at all. I have tried to buy the pump at NAPA and it was not currently listed.

Test the fuel pressure regulator first. I bet even money that is the problem

bump.

Our 62 has been a hard starter since I can remember. When you turn the ignition it always turns the engine over 5-6 times before firing up. Usually it fires up really strong after the wuhwuhwuhwuhwuhwuh...VROOOM!! Lately it has been a bit hesitant in firing up and seems like it's about to stall but never does wuhwuhwuhwuhwuh...vrruhrubrooom. I have redone the entire fuel system from tank to injectors including the FPR and FPD but still the same hard starting. Any thoughts???

I'm baffled because the 60 fires instantly; before the starter has turn over once.

bump.

TTT... anyone?

Check everything;

OK, how about this first; the cold start injector or it's circuit/connector (see FSM). Did the problem get worse with the onset of cold weather?. Check ignition problems; (rotor, cap, plugs, timing, spark plugs) and don't forget the air filter (no offense), but everytime I thought my 62 was going to need a tuneup or major surgery, all it needed was a new air filter. Then there are vacuum or air intake hose leaks, PCV valve and hoses, check all of them.

I've done all that. The fuel system is brand spanking new OEM since less than a year ago. I knew I had a bad injector so I pulled the engine apart and had Witchunter rebuild them. I did a complete tune up during the rebuild. It runs MUCH better after the rebuild but the hard starting did not improve. All hoses are new OEM. No leaks, oil or air. The truck runs like a dream, it's just hard to start and it's super annoying feeling as if the truck is going to stall every time you turn the ignition ya know? Actually it did stall out last night on the first try. After that she fired right up.

If this gives anyone a clue, she does not idle at higher RPMs when she is cold. That seems a little wierd to me. Actually, I just noticed that last night. She idles at 725 from the get go.

Maybe a bad idle control sensor? can that be causing the hard starting? anyone got a spare i can borrow/buy to see if it helps?
