FJ62 SOR Tailgate Backing + Clips Won't Stay Seated

Hey all,

I recently recarpted my FJ62 and I ordered the Spectre Offroad tailgate backing panel and clips for the tailgate carpet and the install has been not great. The clips won't stay in the tailgate and the carpet with the backing assembly is one snagged grocery bag away from being ripped off at any given moment. The center clips seem to hold better than the edge, but it still comes up easy. Is the body side missing grommets for the clips or is this just how this is?

Could I snug up the body holes with inserts to get a more snug seating for the clips?

SOR is likely using aftermarket clips (unverified statement) made in China that -surprise!- don’t fit properly.
I bet those plastic inserts are still available from Toyota since they were used on so many different vehicles. The Toyota clips fit tight.

Before I installed my space age tailgate protector using rivnuts, I had the same problem with the retainers. I put a thin bead of epoxy around the wide part to build it up, let it dry and it snapped in and held until I swapped them out. Hope that might help you.
