She has been idling rough, so I replaced the spark plugs. Still when I start her up she may shut off, the rpms fluctuate from 1000 to 500 or less. Had a full tune up 20 to 25K ago. After driving, it smooths out some, but sometimes give the impression at stop lights she wants to shut off. Rotor, wires and distributor where replace at the time up. Sound and runs fine once on the road.
Is it getting enough fuel? Maybe the throttle cable needs adjusted? MAF and throttle body clean? Also, you replaced the plugs, how did they look? How old are the wires? They should have a date stamp if they are factory plugs.
Sounds like the same rough idle we all have experienced in the 62. Alex and I both had the same issue. Ran lots of injector cleaner through it. The best thing I did was adjust the "golden screw," which sits on top of the sensor (it has a touch of gold paint on it.) The big warning here is you're not supposed to mess with this, so do so at your own risk. Search the 60's forum for "golden screw" for more info. I turned mine only about a 1/4 turn and the idle leveled off around 700.
Another big tip is to make sure your electrical connections are still making a good connections. At both the intake and the mass air sensor there are these six prong electrical connections. Pull these apart, clean with air and an artists brush, and lightly coat with dielectic goop (technical term, the same stuff you would put on the spark plug where it meets the wire). The stuff makes the connection better, which after twenty years may be poor.
Also, one of the best things you can do is to replace the "accordian hose" between your air filter and the mass air sensor. There may well be a bunch of cracks in that thing.
The golden screw is near the blue tag in the middle of the picture.
my guess would be as Turkeypen already mentioned.......... the intake hose could be cracked; usually a stumble and fluxation at idle is indicative of this so check that "accordian hose"
saw this happen to another UC member with a 3FE on a trial ride up in the "holy land" we located the hole and used duck tape to wrap the hose and it ran like a champ for the rest of the trip
What JP said . . . (I think he is the one who fixed Apollo 13 with duct tape). If your accordian is original, duct tape the entire accordian and see if that helps. you can pretty much leave it that way for, well, forever. But, I called RHT and ordered a new one. I think it was $85. (They now make dark grey duct tape)
JP, thanks. I never would have looked at that. Yup, big slice in it, duct tape and shen is now purring like a kitten again. The new plugs help too. Thanks for all the replys, it helps having a large field of experience to draw on.
