I'm replacing my dashboard and stuck with the speedometer cable as my last obstacle. How do you release it to remove the dial cluster?

I remove the screws holding the cluster to the dash, tilt the steering wheel all the way down and pull the cluster forward enough to get my hand behind the speedo. It's just a plastic clip you have to depress and the cable will pop off. The install is harder if you have bigger hands but it will clip back in place eventually. If it seems impossible, you could try disconnecting the other end of the speedo cable and pull it through a few inches to give you space.

If you are right-handed, squeeze your hand behind the gauge cluster. Put your thumb on top of the end of the speedo cable connector, and your index finger on the bottom and squeeze together...as you do this work or wiggle the connector away from you (towards the front of the truck). Be patient, it will pop off.

Got it off. Thanks. I put my right hand under the dash, by the radio cut out, and fit right in. Small hands work better. Ill have my 5 yr old but it back on for me. Thanks again.

Tip for reconnecting the speedo cable: disconnect from the tcase and pull the cable out from the sleeve about two inches, connect the other end back to the gauge, finish reinstalling the dash, then put a drill chuck onto the tcase end, SLOWLY turn the cable as you gently push it back into place in the sleeve, and it'll be guided right back into the gauge's fitting. Remove the drill, reconnect the tcase end, and you're good. Saves a ton of asspain doing it this way, as the cable rarely ever wants to cooperate when you try to reattach it to the gauge without removing the tcase end first.

perfect timing

Just about to tear apart the dash this weekend and was wondering about the finicky cable a fellow cruiser buddy had warned me about. Thanks for the tips on how to tackle the job!

Same here... plan on attempting this tonight if I have enough daylight, otherwise it will be this weekend.

I am about to do a dash replacement myself on my fj62.
Are there any threads that show the entire process from disassemble to reassemble of the dash ?
