I checked the tech threads and saw nothing...

Can the auto tranny in an FJ62 be replaced with the 4 speed manual tranny from an FJ60?

Has anyone ever done this?

Yes it can be done and I am trying to decide if I am going to do it or not. May just go on and slap a whole new set up in there. Engine and all. :D

It has been done before.

Parts list:
clutch
pressure palte
flywheel and bolts
clutch fork and pins
t/o bearing and retainer
cross member with tabs
h42
drive shafts
bell housing
pedal bucket
clutch slave
clutch master
transfer rebuild kit

I am sure I left out something

Having a donor rig would be the way to go.

If you are taking the time and money to swap to a manual, might as well put in a 5 speed, you'll be much happier.

I agree. Depends on what you want to do with it but if you are going to be driving long distances to the trail then a 5 speed make sense. You get the lower 1st gear too unless you go with a H41 four speed.

what kind of 5 speed can i use?

Would it be a factory toyota tranny from another truck?

The H55F 5 speed which came stock in a lot of cruisers outside the US. You can still buy them new from Toyota. The used ones are hard to find since they are popular upgrades here. I am running a new one in my cruiser and am very happy with it so far.

the whole conversion process sounds easy for the pro...I'm an avid mechanic and probably shouldn't try to tackle this myself.

I would like to do this since I have the perfect donor rig. Unfortunately the mechanics in my area are clueless with old Toyotas plus they just don't want to work on these trucks.

How much do the new H55Fs go for?

I haven't done it so my word isn't worth much but, reading write up's it's not that hard of a job, especially for an avid mechanic as you describe yourself.

an new H55F is 1900 to 2000 plus some incidentals, check with Cruiserparts.net or CDan at American Toyota

62s have 411 gears so highway usage will suffer dramatically with a 4spd.

I remember deciding to swap the 5 speed in my ole 3 on the tree. Thought i would be much happier, i miss the 3 speed. It ended up being one of the worst decisions I ever made...

I liked my three on the tree in my old 68. Excellent spacing on the gears and just plain fun to drive. Dang I miss that rusty POS. But this in a 60 and switching from an auto. I was talking about the choice between a 4 or 5 speed. The five speed has basically the same gear spacing as the four speed except that 1st is lower and you add an OD.

Why not do an H55 or an NV4500? both are five speeds. Just choose which one has the gearing you want and go for it.

I just had this done on my '89 fj62. Swapped out the tranny for a 5-speed. The shop did an amazing job. It drives WAY better than it did before. The fj62's really dogged going up to the mountains and now it really kicks, HOWEVER. We are having a hell of a time getting it smogged! I live in California and because there was never an option in the fj62's to actually HAVE a stick, they won't legally smog the vehicle. I'd love to know if this has happened to anyone else. I just dumped 20K into a total restoration of this vehicle and my have to sell it to someone out of state if I can't figure this out.
