So I am back in the game after a 6+year hiatus. Have a fj60 with no drivetrain and will be swapping in fj62 axles, SOA, 35-37s, and a chevy v8, carb or TBI depending on what I come across. What I am trying to figure out is the manual trans and tcase without the super expensive AA adapters. I have a 4speed trans and tcase from a 78ish fj40 but would like the low 1st gear of the sm465. Plus would be easy to use since they bolt up to the chevy already. Does anyone make a plate adapter for the 4speed tcases? Or a 203 doubler to the 4speed tcase? Have also thought about all chevy trans and tcase and then build a hybrid mini truck/cruiser centered rear diff. The main thing is getting the extra low gearing and trying to do it without the expensive adapters. What's the cheapest way to achieve this?

I don't think there are any magic answers to this question. Run GM V8+GM Auto or manual trans, then go AA adapter to FJ60 split t case.

Will the dodge 300 TC mate to a GM trans and have the drops for the drives shafts in the right area to stay stock with 60 axles?

Hi all,

First off, it is a Dana not Dodge 300 t-case; these are found in Jeep CJs (and, IIRC, a few Intl. Scouts) and no the Dana 300 has a centered rear output. The earlier Dana 18 has a rear output offset to the right side.

Alan

Hi all,

Cruisertom, all of the project you envision will be "super expensive," not just the AA adapters. :bang:

A lot of the decisions depend upon the use the rig will be getting, especially the gearing.

Tell us more about your planned use of this truck.

Regards,

Alan

One of my good friends has a plate adapter for a SM465 to a 4 speed case, so it can definitely be done. I'm not sure if they are made anymore though.

The question you have to answer for yourself is whether or not you want a doubler. If you want a doubler, then do a 203 to either 4 speed case, or even better, to a split case.

To avoid adapters, you're going to have to decide to go with either a GM drivetrain or a Toyota drivetrain. If you chose the former, you could run a Dana 300 and a centered rear axle, like a 14 bolt, and never worry about breaking an axle shaft. The Dana 300 is passenger front output so that would work well with your 62 front axle.

Ok finally decided, bought a plate adapter from shawn russell here on mud (nice piece) sourced a 3speed tcase and solved the input gear issue. Now need the chevy 350 and 465 neither of which are hard to come by just timing really. So I will have 4.11's from my fj62 throw those under the 60 and fab up some chevy mounts and figure out a cross member to hold up the other end any suggestions? In the past I have used the AA crossmember that bolts to the back of the tcase using the 6 bolt holes on the input portion of the tcase. Is there another way?

Hi all,

One could argue that an old cast aluminum t-case is not the best thing to bolt a transmission mount to. The later 60 & 70 Series TLCs use removable mounts that bolt under the transmission itself.

Alan

I thought the same thing, yet used one for 10+ yrs in my v8 fj40 with no tcase saver and was hard on it with no problems. It was the AA v8 conversion mount with the cheesy rubber donuts, but worked well.

Buy my 700r4 toybox L/C t-case out of my truck. I need centered now.
