I have a US spec '87 FJ60 (factory air and oil cooler). I'm planning out the job of replacing the weepy water pump and just wanted to get the board's advice on the order of work. I searched the forum but couldn't find anything specific to the FJ60 (as opposed to 62) and I know the belts and plumbing are different.

I have belts, thermostat (with both gaskets), fan clutch, and hoses in-bound along with a new Aisin pump.

Seems like removing the radiator makes sense. Can I just pull the radiator out the top, leaving the A/C condenser and center brace in place? I'll also do the shroud split that folks talk about at this time, I guess.

No need to remove rad.
The shroud split removes the need to remove rad. But it sure makes for roomy workspace, your choice.
Good idea to spray penetrant at bolts on t-stat housing, any others that give resistance.
1. Drain radiator of about one gallon of coolant. Cut the top off a 'simply juice' fourcornered bottle, use it to help drain the coolant into a pail.
2. Remove fan/fanclutch. 4 nuts to flange.
3. Remove shroud and set aside for the split cut.
4. Remove top rad hose. Open up top of t-stat housing.
5. Loosen alternator belt adjuster.
6. Remove hoses on waterpump, remove pump.

Yes, thin smear on the gaskets.
EXCEPT the o-ring that sets upon the tstat.
I have found small remains of the goo in the radiator filler neck....
Did this project earlier this year, and about 5000 miles later checked the system and found strands about the size of fingernail clippings floating in the coolant at filler neck...
No overheat issues.

I went through this same search a few months ago and found via mud and fsm no rtv to waterpump gasket. Just get it lined up right and torque to spec... something like 27ft/lbs, but check that for 100%. I did not use any rtv and had my truck running once since everything was back in and noted I had some seeping from the lower edge so I either went to wimpy on the torque wrench or I should have used rtv. I have since tightened the s*** out of them with a stubby ratchet tho trying to get all my desmog stuff right still so pretty much crossing my fingers its tight now. If not I'll go back in, what else is new. I learn by trial and error.

FYI, removing the radiator is not as easy as it all sounds. If you do, I removed the battery tray and the air condenser bolts so I could push it out of the way an inch more and I removed the center brace that is directly behind the radiator. Its pretty much a full on pita. Be aware too that the tstat bolts are different sizes for each corner. Mark them on a piece of paper. And they are pretty beat from the heat and easy to break so you might want to buy new ones. Fan shroud is easy. I did mine with a dremel and painted each half a different color. Top half is out at this time too since I needed to get back in to tighten the WP bolts.

double check the screws? on the back of the waterpump before installing.
