Does anyone know how strict CA Smog laws are for swapping newer efi 350 v8s into cruisers? the motor would be ~10 years newer than the 2f. Will I have to go to a stnd smog check or a special ref?

you go to the arb referee and get your car inspected and re-tagged for smog purposes. my 85 fj60 is now a 91 GMC which is what my 350 crate motor with tbi is. it wasnt a big deal but i did have a couple issues to contend with...mostly i didnt clear the codes i developed while testing the motor before taking it into the referee and he didnt like my gas cap either.

from there on though its all good: less weight, more horsepower, ability to pass smog check II with flying colors. and of course you get to put fuel injected corvette insignia on your fenders! and in my case it looks like a factory motor installation.

There are quite a few of these swaps registered in California. Engine swap rules in CA basically are:

1. Must be from a vehicle model that was approved for sale in CA

2. Must be same year or newer that the vehicle it is going to be installed in

3. Must be from the same 'class' of vehicle (i.e.: light duty truck)

4. Must pass smog test standards for the engine/vehicle year model (which ever is latest date).

You will probably have to go to the referee - but check with an expert at a TEST ONLY station on nuances regarding this swap. Pretty easy swap, if you have the Marks adaptor and a good harness.
