My transfer case is completely shot, but I can't find a rebuild kit that includes the gears, and I don't feel like spending the $$$ for a new or rebuilt one...Any ideas? Also, before the t-case went out(I haven't driven it since then) it was having a rough time at start-up and idling, along with a minor drop in power while in gear: is this somehow related to my t-case going out or are they seperate problems? I need all the advice I can get

If your tcase was dying and siezing up you would certianly lose power...
But not out of gear and idling and startup. Does it change when you push in the clutch?

And define Completly shot?

Well it makes a horrible noise(kind of like two pieces of metal sliding past each other, or nails on a chalk-board, your pick)while in gear and when I press the clutch in it continues for a few seconds and then dies away. For the idling and start-up problem it doesn't matter whether the clutch is in or not. By shot I mean when I took my tcase apart everything was so loose I couldn't believe it hadn't fallen completely apart already

NCCruiser302, what years your 60? I might know of a spare tcase in asheville. let me see tomorrow if it is available and what shape it is in.

I'd tear it down first and see whats up.
Gears are $$$, but you'll be able to see how thrashed they are once you get it apart. Maybe bearings will fix things right up. Grinding metal seems like bearings, but you never know until its in front of you

or could be the main tower of the tnasfer!:frown: i just rebuild mine about a year and i rebuilded completly all bearing and the main tower. i had the same noise as you and when i figured out I'd to rebuild most of the transfer.

How much did it cost for you to rebuild the whole thing?
Sorry but i don't know exactly cause i also did my tranny. something like 400$ but i don't think i'll be that expensive to you because of the prices in USA. remember i live in a third world country:o :o
also at that time i couldn't find the OEM transfer tower and beleive me the OEM was to expensive so i went with a japanesse aftermarket bran that makes the same toyota parts, when i bought the tower i compare my OEM to the aftermarket and the aftermarket really conviced me to give it a try. hope this help sorry for the long writing.

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to try to figure something out this weekend and hopefully order it sometime next week, how did you find the aftermarket brand?

My local dealer sales many products of that brand. from what i see in your avatar i recomend you to change all the oil of the tranny, transfer, and axle every time you get in to water..
