87 fj60 -- started replacing the tie rod ends today - got the 555 brand - only got one on - the drivers side -i dont know if i did it correct - i know i messed up the alignment and steering wheel - when i threaded the new one in it didnt want to go as far as the old one did so i stopped -- the threads are about a half inch out -- does it matter how far out the threads are -- can this alignment be fixed with out removing it - :bang:

You need to count the exposed threads before removing the old TRE's and install the new ones to match. This will give you an alignment and steering wheel adjustment that is close. After that, you can do the alignment yourself (and adjust so the steering wheel is centered) or take it to an alignment shop. Instructions for doing your own alignment are on mud.

my guess is that the exposed rods are rusted or at least discolored enough that you could tell where the old tre stopped

yes i can see where it stopped but how do you screw the new one in with out messing it up -- i got to a point that it would turn by hand any more

do you have the factory service manual? if not you should get a copy. The starting dimensions for the tie and relay rods are given in the post linked below. You should check the threaded length of the end, old vs. new. I know that toyota made a changes to theirs (the new end has a longer threaded piece) and therefore they "give away" a new rod when you purchase the ends. If the ends are the same length and you still can not get it to install all the way, then you probably need to chases the threads with a tap.

Do the best you can to clean the threads, then apply antisieze.
Mount either the rod or the end in a vise (which-ever fits best into your vise).
Use a big (suggest 18") pipe wrench to screw the end into where you want it.

thanks guys -- got them together today (555) brand - i thought the first one i put in was not in far enough but the threads are all the way up instead of stopping like the oem do - so i got as close as i could with all of them -- i have a copied manual but didnt see the tie rod installation section -- man --- oh well -- its done now i will take picks to show maybe if someone sees something wrong let me know --- i did torque them down right but i didnt torque the lock bracket parts down correctly -- it says like 30 something -- i used the air wrench - i wonder if its ok if i torqued to much down on them -- hope not - and i did put antisieze on the passenger side but not the drivers side - thats what i did yesterday -- thanks again
