Ali came over today and helped me with replacing the spring bushings on the 60. With his help I got further than I thought I would in one day, thanks Ali
What really slowed things dow were the spring hanger pins, they were welded in place. After Ali left I spent a long time trying different things to get them out. I heated the pin trying to melt it loose, I beat the living crap out of it. Finally I had an inspiration.

I used a big pully puller my step dad had in his tools. It's kind of cool since it can be set up with 2, 3, or 4 jaws. He was and electrician and worked on big electric motors, I guess that was why he had it. Worked like magic to press those pins out.

That looks like a job for mister BFH! :D
BFH was totally ineffective, the pin and bushings were at one with each other. Every time I'd wack the pin it would move then snap right back.

I had the same experience with mine when I did the SOA...
It took a REAAAAAAAALY LOOOOOONG time to get those out.
Did you get the greasable shackles?

K

Huuummm I got 75% of the job done then ran into this;

What was the muffler shop thinking?

You can also see the shackle angle is less than optimal with the current set-up.

While I had the shoes off I decided to see if 35" tires would fit as it sits. So I tried on my 36" swampers from the 40 which now measure just under 35";

I did a little test drive into the hills and ran the PS tire up on a rock. This thing has as much flex as a grocery cart. :rolleyes:

Unless you are there to tell them or they understand what it is you want, they will do things like that.

The shackle angle and the flex doesn't surprise me. You can't cheat the physics.:D

Time for some true aftermarket springs, not jerry rigged stockers...

Yeah, I had to have the exhaust re-done on the 40 for similar reasons.

This begs the question; to SOA or not to SOA?

Id say get some lift springs, but that WONT help your articulation AT ALL...You could nix the sways to help get a bit more, but nothing like youre used to.
3 legged DOG man. Now you know why I went that route.
What's the problem with the exhaust!? I dont see nuthin!:rolleyes:

K

I think it's time to sell this thing and get an 80.....

Gotta agree with Keith. If you were going to turn it into a rock crawler, then SOA all the way. Since this is supposed to be a expo rig, SUA with a set of lift springs. JMHO.

Jack

Gotta love the work some exhaust shops do... I had a small leak on my exhaust and I took it off the truck today. The idiots at the shop decided to run one long piece all the way back. I had to cut it in half just to get it out.... :mad:

oh and one of the hangers was ghetto rigged with bailing wire. nice....

I just can't remove the shackle without pulling everything up to the cat.:flipoff2:

That is a possibility.

Agreed.

I think I'll just have some fun with it as it is. Maybe when I see how Shawns SUA lift turns out I'll have a better idea of where I want to go with it.

Meanwhile I need to deal with whatever is causing the death wobble. I put the TSL's on it and nearly lost control. I know, I know TSL's aren't known for their smooth ride, but I had the same tires in the same positions on my 40 and I can cruise on the highway at reasonable speeds with no issues.

That is interesting, I know you have been busy with the 40, but have you had a chance to check the trunion bearing caps, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, rag joint? Maybe have someone sit in the driver's seat and turn the steering wheel back and forth. Look for loose items up to and including the steering box.

Death wobble is a mother to track down. On my 4runner, I had to tighten up the all of the suspension points (left them loose thinking that would make it flex better:doh:) and dialed out some caster. You have replaced the bushings in the front springs, right? I can't see caster being an issue with yours, they didn't add longer shackles or anything like that, so I'm not sure what is going on with the 60.

Hmm, I haven't seen any evidence of any work being done on the 40...this guy is worse than a kid in an arcade me thinks...:D I think he bought the 60 just so that he doesn't have to work on the 40 for a while :flipoff2:

I checked the TRE's and had my son rock the steering wheel back and forth. Nothing observed from those two test. I forgot to rock the wheels back and forth while I had it up on the floor jack but I will try that next to see if the wheel bearings are grossly worn.

I'm terminally ADD. :flipoff2:
