Hi, new to the forum and just got my FJ60 and fixing it up. Quick question- do I need a fan clutch wrench to replace my fan clutch. It looks like I can get a standard box end wrench in there. Can't say that I have ever had to replace one. Looks fairly straightforward, but want to make sure I don't have any surprises. Any other tricks I should know? Thanks.

I was able to use just a normal box end wrench, but it was tight. I have average sized hands (I wear a large size glove). if you have larger hands it may not be possible.

A standard 12mm combination wrench has squeaked by for me in the past. Using the open ended end..
But these wrenches (which can be found anywhere) are short, and the box end is always angled, which won't fit in that tight gap. If you use one of these wrenches and manage to get the nuts off without completely rounding off the corners, replace the nuts with new Toyota ones... so you can get them off the next time. Each time you use this wrench on these nuts, the nut's hex corners get rounded off a little more......

The Toyota PN for those nuts is:

If the wrench shown above doesn't work. The wrench below is the cat's meow for the fan clutch nuts.
Snap-On Wrench, Metric, Hi-Performance, Box, 0° Offset, 12-13 mm, 12-Point
Stock#: XDHFM1213

This wrench is long, so it's easy to get down in there, and the box is not offset so it can be inserted straight down in that tight gap. You just need to file the thickness of the box a tad with a hand file so it fits in the gap...
This wrench makes removing the fan clutch nuts actually fun... But it is very expensive. Ebay deals can be cheaper if you can find one.

That is one of the best(and most used) tools I own, had it prolly 15+ years(or the 3rd or 4th FC I did) Snap On same as yours but 12mm/14mm(which gets most in one wrench) Great for FC, tensioners, etc.

I always seem to loose a nut......

Sorry to reserect this old thread - but are you guys doing this without removing the radiator?
I put in a new radiator not that long ago, and am doing the FC this weekend. Would rather not remove the radiator if possible, save some coolant.

If your fan shroud has been split, you can, fairly easily. Otherwise, you have to remove all the bolts holding the shroud in place and try to remove all the nuts off the fan and clutch with the shroud flopping around then remove the fan and clutch all at once. PITA, but do-able. One of those x-long box wrenches really helps. Don't have to have a $$ snap-on, there are cheap versions out now.

But removing the Rad makes it MUCH easier.

Legend! Thanks for that. I’ll split the shroud - should have done it when I did the rad. I’ll just press a box end wrench flat and weld a longer handle on - good tip! Thanks!

You can do it with out cutting or removing(or even loosing) the fan shroud. A 62 is not as easy as a 60 if I recall.

Should take 30 mins tops...unless you loose one of the nuts(I keep spares)

I second that.
No radiator removal or fan shroud removal required to replace the fan clutch. I've done it a couple times.

This is awesome news! Any more info on why it's different on 62? Excited for a fan again as its getting really hot here...

US spec 62 is just tighter with the 3FE, its acc and belt routing I think are most the reason, shroud may be deeper. I know hate doing belts on the 62 and always end up cursing at it.

but you have a 3f and it should be just like a 2F in a 60, you won't have a problem.

Well beauty! My 62 has a 3f - so lucky me! Bloody yanks get stuck with fuel injection...
