FJ60 Expo Rig

I just purchased an awesome FJ60 from 624life. My wife and I are prepping it for a global expedition as well. The best advice I can give you is follow the KISS method. A stock FJ 60 will take you anywhere you want to go. However for older rigs you need to look at bearings and seal. If you at that point then I would upgrade to forge axles in the rear, logfields in the front, 4:56`s if you running 255/85R/16`s and for lockers I`m going with Yukon Grizzlies, Just as strong if not stronger than Detroits but with smoother action. ARB`s are nice but then again that leaves something to break and more parts to buy to make them work. Which locker is a debate in it self. So I say go with what you like the most. Think about where your going. If your shipping the truck overseas the door way of a shipping container 7'-4". A lifted truck with 35`s wont fit especialy with a roof rack. Just food for thought. Plan the trip, then plan the truck. It will save you a lot of "i should haves". Best of Luck

In addition to a fridge/freezer (pretty darn handy for days in the middle of nowhere) I would suggest getting your HAM radio license and installing a HAM radio. It makes a CB seem like 2 tin cans and a piece of string.

Trying to figure out what i am going to do with the rear axle. Was looking at doing a FZJ80 full floating rear, but i would have to go with 16" wheels. Right now i am running Good Year Dura track 33x12.5x15 and they are not even a year old.

I was looking around and found this http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/FLANGETOY.html. So i went on line and was looking for any one that has used these and found nothing. Really do not want to be the first one to try and make this work.

Don't know if you could do this could you take lets say rotors and calipers from a fj60 and put them on the rear so you could keep a 15" rims size?

Was checking out the truck the other day and found the steering u joint was needing to be replaced which sucks but noticed that the prior owner and added on a second alt but never hooked it up.

Some time this week going to order my add a battery kit from blue sea.http://bluesea.com/category/78/1/productline/overview/329 It will be about $102.00 from http://www.hodgesmarine.com/BLUE-SE...-DUAL-CIRCUIT-SYSTEM-p/blu7650.htm?click=7482. Also going to get the fuse block too.

I fit a 15" stock 60 steelie on a Tundra with a 1.5" wheel spacer, if you're into that sorta thing.

If it were me, I wouldn't bother with the rear axle for a long while. I've done enough on 33's and weight to not worry, nor have I read of any widespread rear axle breakage for wagons until they get built large and hammered on.

That blue 60 above has been all over the world with huge loads on it, and it runs semi-floaters with drums. Maybe if there was an easy way to get rear discs with a reliable e-brake, I'd do that. But there isn't.

Haven't seen a need for a high output alt either. The HZ has an 80A and has been ample with the hefty loads it gets.

I have been in touch with the Schmids for some time. They have been cruising for 28 years in the same rig with only one engine overhaul done last year. As I said a stock Land Cruiser will take you damn near anywhere you want to go. Just fix up what you have with some forge axles and lockers and you will put a Camel Trophy Rover to shame with a hell of a lot less money. As Paflytyer said above, a fridge freezer, Ham Radio, and also Long range fuel tank and water tanks with a good filtration on both the fuel and water. The FJ60 Axles are very strong. If you are dead set on an axle swap then you might as well be a grizzly and step up to DANA 60`s or even 70`s. Then again that would be way over kill. I would stick with the stock set up. Tires: You may want to jump up to 16" steel wheels. The 16" tire is more prevalent abroad. In addition you typically get a stronger side wall especially when aired down when crossing deserts. You can`t go much better than BFG 285/75R/ 16 Q AT`s or BFG 255/85R/16`sMT`s K2o`s. I would also invest in a good set of MUD Chains. Even the knurliest mud tire will get clogged up in thick mud. That is unless you have a 500HP Big Block Lurking under the hood to spin the mud off.

Sorry for the long wait in between updates. I have been really busy at work and have not had the time.

Finally narrowed down my engine and other parts.
Engine-4bd1t and adding inter cooler.
Trans- nv4500. What is a good year for this and make dodge or Chevy.
Going to use a 60,62 transfer case.
Twine stick kit. Does any one make one that is cheaper than advanced adapters?
Isuzu adapter who sells a nice kit that won't break the bank?
Good place for a rebuild kit? Isuzu dealer or after market?

Was wondering if the nv4500 is as long as the h55f and if so could i use drive shafts from a 85 and up 60? Instead of getting custom shafts made.

Taking care of rust this Saturday shoul be fun also mounting up my inclinometer from a 80's 4runner.

checkout the 60s forum there is a good thread on this very same engine going on right now....

Definitely check the 60s forum as there are plenty of guys going through this build (DirtGypsy, Longbow, Boots, etc.) and for the Twin Stick kit, look no further then Georg @ Valley Hybrids (OrangFJ45 on the boards here).

The Isuzu is a great engine that fits and works well in a 60. The install is straight forward and now, has been done many times. If you post a question in the mud 60 or diesel forums, or the Isuzu section of 4BTswaps,com, you will get a solid answer.

People have used H55's, various NV4500's, Toyota and GM autos too. All will work. The adapter of choice right now, seems to be Allmaris Machine's kits, there are a few different kits they make, good and bad to each. I used the IDS kit, which is no longer made. Allmaris is on mud and 4BTswaps - 69rambler and his name is Dustin

My suggestion is plan well, keep the whole NPR truck for lots of little parts you will need, and go for it. Read all the swaps first, this will answer most of your questions and familiarize yourself with how the swaps go together. After that ask?

My 4BD2tc swap is in the diesel section, follow the link below. Also search mud for Isuzu and 4BD1/2, you will find at least a dozen swaps, with a few going in right now.

Well time for a update.

Not going diesel just rebuilding my 2f. Now since I am not doing a diesel thinking about taking that money and using it for a h55.

In the process of buying a pto winch. Any one want a ARB winch bull bar? Something I need to look in to is if the twin stick kit is compatible with a pto winch. Have not looked can you put the transfer case into neutral with it?

Going to do like a lot of others and raptor line the hole body of the truck after I get done sand blasting.

Things to rebuild are engine, transfer case, pto winch, and the AC the wife says "it's to hot in the truck".

Just a heads up on the h55 (best mod to any 60) you'll need a later model split case and drives shafts.

Well just won a warn 8274 off of eBay so not going to do a pto winch, but instead a 8274 rebuild. Next month gonna send off my steering box for a rebuild. Box leaking and steering sloppy. Was thinking of pulling the wiring harness out and re due it. Going to a. Build a new one or b. clean up the old one by cutting out all the old fuseable links and putting in self resetting circuit breakers.

Still need to track down a rear axle from a fzj80 and a locker for the front. Going to use the toyota switch and ecu. Will have to wire it so the ecu thinks it is in 4wd low at all times for it to work. It should be fun.

well its about time for a update. I know have the 2F apart and going to send it off to the machine shop for some clean up.

Got it all apart and found that it looks like it is in pretty good shape. Will have to get a new Cam mine is chewed up in a few places. Also i found 2 broken piston compression rings. But all in all the block appears to be in good shape.

Now i just need the following kits:
Carb rebuild kit
Engine gasket kit
Transfer case rebuild kit
Steering box rebuild kit.

I am glade Hanuka, Christmas, and Kwanzaa are all coming up and my birthday is 3Jan14. I hope i will get some good stuff.
