my fj60 has a header that the PO installed, and it had a really worn out manifold gasket on it, but when i went to replace the manifold gasket, i realized the header had these sort of raised edges around the pipes that kept it from sitting flat against the head of the motor. and the gasket i pulled off is the same as the stock gasket, and it did not take into accout for the raised edges on the header. so i guess what i'm really asking here is, do i need a special gasket for the header, or do i need a different header? i don't have any pics, but if you guys can't help me without photo's, then i'll get some in a few days. thanks!

If there is enough of a weld holding the pipes into the flange, take it to a machine shop and have it surfaced. Take the intake manifold too and have them matched. I just did this with my man-a-fre headers and intake and it made a huge difference. Also, get a Toyota manifold gasket if you haven't already purchased one. They have a much larger ring around the exhaust ports.

Do you know what header it is specifically? One piece or two piece?

Can you grind off these raised portions so it sits flat?

Use some K&W copper coat gasket goop on the exhaust ports during reassembly. It helps prevent leaks and is better then an RTV type sealant.

Felpro manifold gaskets are highly recommended and whatever one Mark Algazy (65swb45) sells is sure the bomb. You may contact him to find out where to get one.

X2 on the felpro gaskets and two of them doubled up with a good coat of the aerosol copper coat.

I had issues with my headers and leaking. I was going to double up the gaskets as well. I'll have to give that a try.

gaskets

yea, the gaskets looked like they were quality pieces, it is just they didn't account for the header not having a flat surface....it is a one piece steel header of an unknown brand, the header has rectangular raised edges on the surface that should fit flat against the head of the motor. the raised edges are not actually the pipes....it's strange...anyway, i think i could have them machined flat, i didn't think of that, but why are they there in the first place? thanks agian!

exhaust leak

the engine runs real smooth so i figured there is not an intake manifold leak, so would the exhaust leak really rob me of any power? i'll fix it anyway, i'm just curious....
